Not sure about that,I was 16 in the late 80s,was working for anglewest on lower regent street as a scaffold labourer earning 35 quid a day, think the scaffs was on 70 quid a day,so wasn't all a bed of roses for everyone.

also pete burns gave birth to Jason gibbs in the 80,s,,,,,should have been a bricklayer like his dad, instead of HIV for Scaffs!

That dayrate of 70 was spot on but for us on price the sky was the limit & withoutall the hse booolcks of today it really was a good crack- trainers shorts & a ripped tshirt if u were luck . As well as thev nthe pub by 2:30 lolo
But it wasnt ascasy as today.many hours on the chaingang or pullin a rope, i dont think we had forklift access till the mid 90s, but even the hoddies were on good cash but had to work for it, can you remember superhod from the sun. Think he was on 2k a week & i can remember another hoddie comin to work in a yellow roller lol

I actually earned a Grand for the first time in 1980......on price

Dico is right - it's harder to get a Bag of Sand these days and it's not worth as much as it was....

Mind you, the Music was mostly shyte in the 80's......

Scaffolding In The 1980s Was A Glorious Time, I Was Not Long Married, And Taking Home £100 Per Week. Till I Got A Start At Torness For Mcalpine My Wages Went Through The Roof It Was Brilliant, Great Job With Great Men Some Of Whom Im Stiil In Contact With. Never Very Keen On Bananarama Though I Was More Into Carmel Mcourt From Manchester A Wee Woman With A Fabulous Voice (Forget Duffy And Adele This Dame Was The Real Deal)

No harness's, trainers not boots, not even a hard hat sometimes. Standing on the ledgers on the corners pumping gear up 10 lifts, flipping long about like it were matchsticks, especially if there were young ladies watching, the old "one board run", oh an spandau ballet, duran duran and bucks fizz - happy days!:D

Best times £1000-£1500 on price. Never had any problems like we do these days. Just got on with it.

Pinch ties in the windows & if you were lucky a 1m wire bond tied round the drain pipe. Could earn a lot banging up leaners round Croydon!!

Mind you more scaffolds falling over these days have we moved forward?

atleast we earnte it stewart some only know the norm!!! perhaps one day it will be back never say never mate good days and like you say never had any problems if in dout!!! beef it up

The ones I hear about are local & not on the web!!

Worked in London in the 1980's if something fell down every scaffold firm would do a drive past. Remember an SGB job coming down the Fulham road.

Been scaffolding 30 years seen more collapsed scaffolds in the last 5 years than ever before, must just be me.

no ragscaff not you mate but i would say the lack of exsperience that some recieve!! if a jobs advertised for lets say a part 2 or advanced scaffolder there exspected to be at there prime with the ticket but some are not iam afraid:nuts:

£400 a week instructor in 1978 good times mate met a few scaffolders and contractors that were on that contract all had good times from i could hear the same as the channel rail link

In the right place at the right time we all need a bit of luck and the 80s was my luck.
