Regulation, an aid for scaffold safety

I got ordered to clip on couple days ago.... I was a fully boarded lift... and it was double handrailed  Have also been told to wear my harness when laying out soleboards. Why do we have to use safety equipment against the manufacturers guide (i.e minimum height a harness will save you)

I find myself singing Jackos "leave me alone" song whenever a suit and boot comes walking along....

Most Safety blokes have to be seen to be 'doing their job', even if they have nothing to do... Justifying their overpaid wages is all they are interested in.

Ive been made to clip onto an Alloy Tower before.
I asked the so-called Safety Inspector if the tower was tested to take the weight of a 14stone man falling over the side and if it was not, wouldn't it fall on top of me - causing more danger.
He made a 'clipping on' hand gesture and walked away - lips sealed.

Nice for him to clarify my honest question, wasn't it.

if you had your PASMA ticket you should no how to erect it in a safe working zone at all time:p

I don't see the point of wearing a harness below 3rd lift.
It's for 6m and above ain't it
i.e if you fall from 2m your still going to hit the deck ! :/

Most of the people in safety are failed scaffolders [like plastic policemen] they tried it could not hack the heights so digressed into safety and decided to make things as bad as possible for the real men they left behind.

I realise you have to wear them and that the shock absorber would take some of the force out of the fall.
It states harness for use working 6m and above and lads are saying they've got to be clipped on basing out !
To a certain extent Jackdan is right, I'm comming back into this after health and safety has gone mad.
I never had to wear a harness ever or glasses or tool lanyards. I could work in shorts and take my t-shirt off and didn't have to wear gloves if I didn't want to.
Can't believe how overboard its gone

Clip on to the inside ledger (remove a board if it helps, you ARE allowed to do that) is the guidance, though still if the bungee bit deploys you'd probably still hit the ground on with a 2m lanyard. The manufacturers are the ones who have tested their equipment and take responsibility for its effectiveness. So really we should follow their guidance.

If you have the Barracuda version lanyard/manyard then you can clip on pretty much anywhere, handy :noworry:

Jason that's a very good point, I wouldn't bet on it. I don't think they like being challenged with questions and points they cannot answer or backup.

I wonder if other trades who put up their own alloy Towers have to adhere to SG10 guidelines....?

No sg4 on alloy towers, you follow the manufacturers instructions and if you watch the DVD the men are not wearing harnesses.

Id like to move into Safety at some point.
I usually hang back, let others do the work, disappear when real graft needs doing and grass as many honest hardworking guys as i can, just to be a prick and will make others break their back, whilst i go arse lick the boss.

But, im not sure i have what it takes to be a Safety Officer. :notrust:
What do you guys think?

Yet if someone is putting up one, they are still "at height" and would still be at the same risk, if not more, of a fall compared to a scaffolder :weird:

Cheers Flinty, yeah clip onto inside ledger Im aware of that mate
My harness has the scaffhook on it for ease of use
I'm not saying I don't use it just that I think clipping on 1st lift seems a bit pointless IMO

Cheers Jackdan I've just bookmarked it mate

Flinty,

It's the same for us, if we can erect using the safe zones we wouldn't need a harness. It's just big fearty gaffers myself included that require you to wear it just in case there is an unforeseen set of circumstance requires you to over reach or the like.

perfect for the rigs or a big site, you dont need to know a lot but put it across well

I agree, it's an odd one.

I know mate and I'm all for harnesses they have a proven track record of saving scaffs.

you cant fall off if you erect it to PASMA guidlines, you are ALWAYS in the "safe zone"

Ah I see, sorry I'm none the wiser with alloy towers, only seen other trades wobble around on them.

Last resort I think that's how they describe it now. Just been speaking to Spanset, £60 for harness and £100 odd quid for twin tail lanyard, quite expensive for last resort but as you say Flinty we are all used to using them.
