theres no chance the budget is being cut 35% in april,35% in 5 year constitutes a far less reduction in real terms due to inflation and budget reviews, also the worst of the cuts have been planned for the 1st 2years to front load the cuts.in 5years time if the same incumbants are still there they will be sweetening depts up not cutting as to be re-elected.

35% over 5years=7% then you have reviews inflation etc this means they are actually one of the better off depts then.

35% thats over a third not on your nelly NEVER each dept was told to find up to 25% savings but in reality most depts have been cut less than 20%.your making gov policy up as you go along steve.

oh yea well police our industry and what do they do in the mean time?yes you said the hse cant go to sites and stop the rouges as they were being hit with 35% cuts??/do you think these cuts are made right away,in whole?DO YOU THINK 35% OF THEIR ORGANISATION DISAPPEARS IN APRIL?so can the hse still carry out vists or IS THAT NOT FESIBLE??

that will depend on everybody working together well...i suppose but why should you do it right and joe bloggs down the street do the same job for 60% less of the cost .. is that fair i ask you ?

no it aint fair and it happens all the time , not playing on a level field etc

listen we all know the answer to that ditty steve, two mins ago YOU had the hse not visiting sites due to cuts now you ask if its fair they let away companys not complying with the new regs,MAKE YOUR MIND UP MAN.are you confused somewhat??

You'd be surprised how much some of these organisations could cut back on without reducing the frontline services, junkets, conferences, meetings about meetings, talking shops, all coming from their budgets and then paying expences to those within their organisations to attend. A certain amount of paid sick days allowed for annually and taken if sick or not, private use of facilities IE, phones, computers, etc. Run a tighter ship and savings will be made, cut out the waste and spent the budget on what its intended for.

as with any organisation brandy there can be savings made without major disruption to services(nhs apart)but when these trimmings go longer and deeper there you tend to find the white of the flesh ie the breaking point.

In big private sector organisations the structure of command is as in a pyramid, at the top there is management and down the lines the workers but its not top heavy. In these Govt agencies it seems the pyramid is upside down and the frontline workers are having to carry too much because its top heavy. To stop it from collapsing you've got to reduce the weight on top and in a budgetary sense this means transferring the rescoures down.

correct mate, but if repots are to be belived on here that the hse are to blitz every site going and that has been said then its additional staff it needs not cuts.so having to withstand 35% reductions over a base period of 5years will mean a wholely less effective operation.this in a period where private investment is starting to gain confidance again meaning many more construction projects to monitor,my guess is the hse wont be turning the screw on any rouge outfits very soon as is the norm.

The HSE budget will be reduced by 35% over 5 years - the current budget of £225 million pa will be reduced to £150 million pa by 2014.
The HSE currently employs appx 3500 people, they are planning to reduce this by appx 700 people by 2014 - of the current 3500 people appx 1400 are inspectors - half of those work for Hazardous Installations Directorate (HID) - they look after chemical plants and oil refineries etc.
The other half are Field Operations Directorate (FOD) - Construction Division is part of FOD consisting of appx 120 inspectors nationwide. There are few specialist inspectors tacked into this as well in such areas as occupational health, offshore and diving for example.
Hope this clarifies the situation for you of what is happening with HSE.
