Alright so as the title says I could do with some help finding myself a company willing to take me on, I am in Middlesbrough and have never done scaffolding before. I know the obvious things like to look for advertisements (of which I have found none) and post your CV + cover letter to all companys in my area but I just wondered if there are any other tips you could give me as people in the profession you have probably seen this type of thing often!

Any help I'll gladly take on board!

Gareth

Hi Gareth and welcome to the forum. I run a small firm who maybe take on a couple every year but CV's don't do it for me. You can't beat a young lad turning up in the yard on a Monday morning bright eyed and bushy tailed looking for graft. Maybe tell them there is now an additional 2K grant available for taking you on over and above your training grant, that might interest them.

Yeah Im going to try speaking to people in person, The only problem I can see is a desk jockey just trying to palm me off for the average young 'dead head' wandering in looking for work. I will try and target a few names from company websites to ask for. I think my cover letter and CV make me sound like a bit of a doyle and maybe they are looking for abit more of a 'rough around the edges grafter'.

That's exactly what they are after.

Such is the industry, however persistence will pay off, Contact local jobcentre to tweak CV Go to NASC website for info about SG4 10, and TG 20, read some of the threads here Jason's the History of Scaffolding, get a feel for the industry, There is a charity or something up north called (pertemps) of something? try them, Train to gain. but I agree with aom you have to seen, it was always early morning's for me. Keep trying and best of luck.

Yeah Im just reading through the sticky now actually, I will contact Pertemps they are just local to my home! Just of hand do you have any more information on that 2k grant aom? just so I could use it as ammo :) I am 21 which is going to be my biggest problem I think :( but I honestly think what I have learnt over the past few years in terms of life skills and how hard it is out there in the real world to make something of yourself do stand me in good stead.

I really am so keen to get back into work and into what I believe for me could be a really bright future! just hope someone gives me a break now!

1 visit scaff yards

2 visit neta at stockton

3 visit jobcentre back to work advisor re funding etc....

4 and donn't give up

You're right, being 21 is not a handicap. The fact that you are keen is also good make sure you tell them that and then show it by your actions even if they just offer you a few days casual.

I am registered with the CITB and all my training requirements are all handled by them which is good for me as it takes a right load off but the down side to that is I have kind off taking my eye off the ball with how it all works and what happens when to be honest which means I really don't know a lot about the grant all they told me was I was getting it and would get more if I registered any more apprentices. Search the Cskills web site there will be lots off information there.

Hi Gareth first of all welcome to the forum.

All good valued information from the lads BUT nobody's asked the question are you unemployed at the moment if yes why not ring your local training centre ask if they're still giving free training in scaffolding and get your part 1 then you will at least get a foot in the door and with a bit of luck get in with a company that would put you through your assesment. a little knowledge is better than none.and as for being 21 thats just about the right age at least you know what you want to do...good luck

I see where you are coming from AOM, I am currently unemployed and began recieving jobseekers 2 weeks ago :(. I dont want to be like the many other people (day dreamers) you hear of and read of who think they are unemployed claiming JSA and so are going to get all their tickets paid for no questions asked whether its scaffolding or going offshore!

I will have a search about for some local training providers and I will ask about! I have today emailed NETA but I will also call them tomorrow when they open (Teesside scaffolder).

Makes sense to try and get my part 1 on my own even if I dont have a job lined up, show Im willing and all that, If I cant find anyway of funding for training I doubt that will happen though! Its early doors yet so we will see.

Just a question for the chap from Teesside, have you been in the game long and do you know of any firms you have known around here for having a good rep? basically I dont wanna go and work for any daft micky mouse firms with bad reps for poor work (might sound abit stuck up as I dont have a toe in the profession yet).

Heres a good place to start give these a ring
if these cant help maybe they can give you a number of someone who can

I will find somewhere eventually Im sure, there seems to be a fair amount f jobs on the forum but then again theres probably 100's of scaffs to each job!

Don't worry, your a fair bit away from doing a scaff out a job. If you do get a kick in the door you won't be long sussing the firm out yourself, if there is a que a mile long waiting for training don't hang about but if there is a steady stream heading for their tickets keep the head down and tail up and you will be fine.

Just thought if give this a bump, I could gO on and say how much of a hard worker i am always on time and a quick learner but I'd prefer to prove it! I wouldn't mind working home or away, also I'm in Teesside :)
