300mm was the correct distance given in one of the first CITB blue books back in the day. This was the strength point from the fixed ledger to upright or standard to give less bend on the pin or sleeve. Always worked to it & if you plan your job right you can keep to it. Takes a bit of thinking when basing out on a slope!!

That distance is still recommended in todays teaching. even some safty guys i know have insisted you splice the joint if its more than 300mm. " jobs worth ".
