I dont want to fall off the scaffold any more than they want me to fall.Gotcha system is fine but only big companies will pay for more than 1 kit.Other than that we're dependant on the crane and on a busy site its not ideal.

3. Do You Think Training Is Sufficient In The Scaffolding Industry? No, Boy’s coming back from training centres with little if any additional knowledge or practical ability than when they left.

4. Would You Like To See Full Apprenticeship Brought In? No, I think the time spent should be enough to make a difference, just make better use of the time.

5. What Would You Change In Regards To CISRS? Works well enough although should not be the be all and end all. Loads of good advanced scaffolders were landed with score cards and while nobody with any clout had the balls to do anything about them, main contractors stopped accepting them effectively forcing highly experienced men to start all over again.

The biggest single thing in my area would be more unannounced site visits. Might sound a bit unusual but h & s should not be a geographical lottery.

Advanced guard rails: I haven’t used them but like most people I have investigated them to the best of my ability. To the best of my knowledge they are zero rated and therefore would not qualify as a hard barrier for any other trade so why would you think it’s suitable for the scaffs.

The Step: My sister had something similar in the late eighties to keep fit, I’m as fit as I want to get. Also, I was always led to believe that constantly working from a step ladder continuously was frowned upon and some other form of access equipment should be considered. (Don’t think I really need to mention working off the top step). Unlike the advanced rail, I have actually used the step and have come to the conclusion that I would feel safer working off bare steel with my feet spread for stability than trying to fit a hand rail off a platform the size of a tea tray with my feet forced together. Prepare for a lot more strains and related injury at work issues should this pathetic piece of legislation be forced upon us.

Do You Think Training Is Sufficient In The Scaffolding Industry? i think on the grand scheme of things training is sufficient for the industry, but it is let down by lack of suitable candidates for training , too many people being trained while on the dole and no chance of job experience, also lack of older experienced scaffolders to help train the nanny state generation. aswell as a lack of training facilities for specialist activities

yes i would like to see 3 or 4 year full time apprenticeships brought in aswell as a scheme that guarentees smaller companies with a good training ethic , lump sum payments to help ease the problem of the fact that once trainees are trained they tend to go looking for the bigger better money leaving small companies to start from scratch again , a lump sum payment would encourage them to contiue persevering with trainees or help them retain some of the trainees

i would suggest they were more clear in the methods and legislation they advise on , for example the fact that 50% of people think its illegal to work off or use ladders, the hse create far too many grey areas and when you phone for advice they never want to put their neck on the line, also they need to look at what works and what doesnt dont just pass legislation trial it with the companies and the personnell it effects ask for feedback listen to feedback act on that feedback

Yes and No.......There appears to be an over emphasis on Hooking On and getting the boys to take photos of jobs (that they may or may not have erected themselves?)....on the job training has to be best!


4. Would You Like To See Full Apprenticeship Brought In?​

Yes. Apprenticeships don't seem to exist any more but a certain amount of hands on training should be a minimum requirement for qualifying as a Scaffolder. I know of (and I'm sure most of you do) of cases where someone who has never been on a scaffold before, has come on a job with a ticket after just two weeks in a training centre!​

5. What Would You Change In Regards To CISRS?​

When Cards for Scaffolders were first introduced by CITB they were for life. There should be no need to renew your card every few years unless you are upgrading....... that just seems to be a money-making scam. The Safety part of the card is a separate issue and you still need a Safety Passport on many jobs anyway.​

I could probably write a book on this, but will try to be brief: Scaffolders are the elite of the Construction Industry and should be recognised as such. ​

A large proportion of our work involves providing safe access for other trades to work from and we have a very high degree of safety awareness .... but we don't need to be constantly lectured by Safety Officers with no background in scaffolding on which techniques we should employ to achieve the desired results. We can regulate ourselves.​

If new legislation is to be introduced regarding scaffolding, make it a Criminal Offence for anyone other than a Certified Scaffolder to alter or modify any scaffold in any way................even undoing one fitting could result in catastrophe! ​

Sorry Gary, looked like a blank form to me. I know what you mean though, I had to do mine a few times and after the balls up I had with the scaffs quiz I didn't want to make a rip roarin c**t of it.
