ive had enough of this crumbling country

Hi mate, from my experiance i would say that like many many other vacanies its not what you know but who. however during the past 8 years that i was there, there has been a great deal of changes in the Middle East with regards to qualifications and experiance of scaffolders, mainley due to alot of input from well established International companies, they do these days tend to look at ones qualification and experiance, with the minimum of one holding NVQ Level 3 and advanced tickets as well as a minimum of 5 years experiance in a supervisory role , health and safety is a major concern now within the Middle east countrys due to there appaling statictics over the past years, i know this does'nt help your cause, i am just trying to put you in the picture of how things are. i wish you all the best and hope that some one some where will give you the chance to prove yourself.

Bigbadbob is right. No requirement for hands on scaffolders here as all done by cheap Asian labour.

Im going for the advanced ticket NVQ level 3 in december and because im cis will be paying for it £995.
so i think i might as well stop peeing in the wind and wait till then

Sorry i haven't replied sooner, but my computer is playing up and it's taken me a while to get it fixed, albeit temporarily i'm told.

Anyway, BigBadBob and Fredscaff are correct, there really is nothing for just scaffolders. All the scaff jobs are taken by Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalese, Phillipinos, etc, etc,.

Big Bad Bob is right, and you will need Advanced and some experience behind you first and then as mentioned, it helps if you know someone in the right place.

Also mentioned, was the safety side here. That has become really quite important and although it is still some way off the UK in most places, the intention is to get it to those standards eventually. I've moved into the HSE side of things most of the time (and miss scaffolding and the craic terribly !) and there are certainly opportunities in that field if you were interested enough and got some training and experience behind you.

Good luck with the Advanced ticket.

Regards,

J

I would imagine that you might have a pretty good chance of landing something when you get the Nebosh sorted, but you will only know if you start applying for vacancies as they come up, or even trying speculative ones direct to companies in the business.
With your Nuclear background, you might be interested to hear that the UAE are on the verge of building a load of Nuclear Power Plants. The first is up near Sila and is due to start either late this year or early next, the last i heard.
It might be worth checking The Gulf News website for further developments on the actual dates. I heard that Hyundai were favorites for the contract, but be warned, these far eastern companies (Samsung, Chiyoda, etc,.) like their pound of flesh and expect long perods between R&R's, but if you don't mind that, then something like that might suit. Quite where to contact them i don't know, but try their websites first and you might pick up some info from them.
Good luck.

As for the far east or middle east you would be lucky to get any sort of work on the tools. They generally use local labour in the far east and mainly indian/nepalese labour in the middle east.
I worked as a project manager in singapore back in 2003 and I was the only westerner in a team of over 200. (8 managers)
The middle east historically has british scaffolding management - although this is slowly changing.
To get any sort of work in these sectors you would usually need substantial scaffolding knowledge alongside some managerial experience.
CISRS Advanced card, CISRS supervisors card & SMSTS always helps, & contacts in the country you're looking to find employment are generally a good starting point.
The power and utility sectors are probably different, but I have no experience in these fields.

Wow Mate you must be working for one hell of a company out there, took me 6 years to reach those dizzy heights, be carefull with the graturity bit mate, it does'nt quite work out as you have quoted, read the UAE Labour laws and i quote, you get 1 weeks pay per year for every year worked on an unlimited contract up to 3 years, most companies will give 1to 2 airfares + 30 days leave per year, some companies will give an houseing allowance in a contract package, and you find your own accommadation, you may end up paying water and electric, yu may find a company that will pay and find accommadation for you, few and far between, and you will only get a grand a week if you work for one of the major contractors, most are offering about 500 to 750 pounds a week tax free, the credit crunch has had a huge impact on the middle east thats why i am back here, Fredscaf will no doubt give you some feedback on this.

As you say Bigbadbob it took you 6 years to reach these standards so you know it can be achieved. I am not saying that is the package for everybody just that it is the standard to reach for.
As for gratuity if you are made redundant you will receive 70% of your monthly salary(excluding living costs) per full year worked.
Its true the recession has affected lots of things and obviously guys like you have shown the Asians how to scaffold correctly and safely so now it is only to be expected that companys will try and employ Asians as they are much much cheaper. I believe this is what happened in the Far East 20 years ago?
