Saltend blockade part of wildcat action over redundancies

Protesters outside the Saltend site this morning.Protesters blockaded the BP Saltend site this morning as part of wildcat action in a row over redundancies.

About 400 workers started a picket which blocked the entrance to the biofuel plant, causing traffic chaos for commuters.

Traffic returned to normal after the workers ended the blockade at around 9.30am.

The dispute involves mechanical contractors for Redhall Engineering, a firm based in Middlesbrough, who are working at the Saltend site.

They have accused Redhall Engineering of not sticking to a national agreement on redundancies.

Strikers say the company should be offering redundancy specific to individual contracts, not to its employees nationally.

Keith Gibson, a GMB member who works on the site, told the Mail: "All we want is for Redhalls to honour the national agreement.

"It is an unofficial strike, we have not taken a ballot, but we want action and we want it now."

The strikers were made up of scaffolders, electricians, welders and other mechanical engineers.

Mr Gibson said shop stewards were in conversation with Redhall officials about the matter.

A spokesman for BP said: "We wish to confirm that the disruption caused in the Saltend area this morning has involved contractors working for Redhall Engineering Services Ltd who are working on the Vivergo Fuels Limited project."

how come the scaffs always walk in support of everybody else but when they need the support they get bugger all.

maybe its because were that little bit more millitant minded than other trades, and can better tell a right from a wrong, when you hit the cobbles you cant decry another man for staying in...........but you then know what hes made of and you never put yourself in the position of relying on him ever again.

us scaffs have a special bond unlike any other trade id say.

while working on the golden eye project at st fergus aboot 8 years ago,the scaffs walked over breaches in the blue book agreement.
the rigger/erectors backed us and took the rest of the site with them.
it was one of the best days out ive ever hadwent on for the weekend and a return to work on monday.
we won our case job done.
all the best to the boys on the frontline.tha national agreement is the only real rights left for construction engineering workers and is under attack we must fight to keep it in place for the future of our industry and our kids

Probably because scaffolding is team work really, which in itself generates a kinda commeraderie between the lads, which also leads in a way to a certain kinda socialising friendship, any decent scaffolder will have a load of peoples names in his fone mainly scaffolders who they have only met thru work yet keep in regular contact an even meet up for a few pints when say working in that area or summit,

all your brickies, joiners , welders etc etc are too busy poncing around thinking they are important , or working in their own little squads or alone not speaking to anyone trying to earn more money than anyone else on site so they can go buy a permanent marker and tell the world what they earned that week on back of the dunny door , just below that message thats always wrote on doors ,:toung::nuts:

celticbhoy i have to disagree you should decry a scab for staying in.james connely and the red clydesiders did and thats why weve got rights and working practices.

always thought energies are better channeled into the situation in question rather than the targeting of lesser willed individuals, which for me has always been the downfall of protestations and strikes.....it shows a lack of cohesive control of the men when bullying starts and more importantly takes the eye of of the pressing issue at heart.so my ethos is always just ostricise them and ignore them there is no gain in another mans pain.

you hit thr nail on the head mate, never looked at it like that before,my uneducated head just wants to butt them, but your right, to devide and rule is their only plan!

Remember it well daftscaff !!!! DO YOU THINK I WOULD LEAVE YOU DYING,,,WHEN THERES ROOM ON MY HORSE FOR TWO !!!

well said lads think there lies a battle ahead to keep or preserve the conditions in the agreements we have at present, traveling men giving local addresses has to stop its undermining the lodge payments.

whats james connolly got to do with an industrial dispute,or the corrossion of the national agreement(naecci)keep it real.ive heard that the lads down in pembroke are having problems with foreign labour, and others using local adresses INSTEAD OF CLAIMING THE DIG ALLOWANCE AS IN THE AGREEMENT,WE KNOW TIMES ARE HARD BUT THEY WILL BE HARDER IF THEY RIP UP THE AGREEMENT

ashamedly this is widespread now daftscaff travlers giving local addresses,me and lad had start on station october told 2year work but to attain the work we would have had to go local we never contemplated this and gave the start a bye.

james connolly was involved in the unions way back in 1900s and his points of view helped educate the workers in their fight against the bosses, nothing to do with sectarianism as most rangers fans think

James Connoly had no time for sectarianism, he was for the rights of all workers regardless of creed.

Famous Quote's from James Connoly.

If you strike at, imprison, or kill us, out of our prisons or graves we will evoke a spirit that will thwart you, and perhaps raise a force that will destroy you, we defy you, do your best.

Womens Rights,

The worker is the slave of capitalist society, The female worker is the slave of that slave.

That quote was the inspiration for John Lennons song " Woman is the ****** of the world "
