do your bit

was wondering how many members of the forum who put so much energy into slagging off the agencies, saying lets start agency of our own, lets set up a union and unite.

have you all actually joined the S.C.C.R

do any of you actually intend to help set up and run this agency or union

or do ya just want to shout about it and let someone else do all the graft of getting it all together.

im not agreeing or dis-agreeing with any of your comments im just curious to know who has or hasnt got the balls to match the mouth :wondering:[/QUONot really sure if i understand this post,as for joining the S.C.C.R yes i will be joining.

what i was saying oldscaff is if you go thru all the threads and topics involving agencies on the forum you will see lots of people posting things like.

fcuk them all off and start our own agency

we should start our own scaffolders union

we should do this, should do that , dont do this etc etc

im not saying they wrong or right to say that , what im asking is do any of them actually have it in them to go do what they are shouting they should do

IE set up an agency, or union, or whatever. the likelyhood is they would not , they would just go with the band wagon and if something else popped bail out faster than you could say, Union of scaffolder agencies :D

I do admire Ragscaff et al for his dedication in setting up the SCCR and with all good intentions, I have no doubt.

I did intend on joining - be it only to help out the cause by chipping in with a tenner - although I since decided against it after reading some of the comments and posts from one of the SCCR committee members, Steve Gregory.

I think the SCCR needs to decide what exactly it is and what it does (or intends to do) I found it a bit ambitious that one its first objectives is to try and reverse some EU legislation! Surely by setting themselves such unachievable targets, they’re going to struggle to encourage current member to renew their memberships at the end of the first year. Members will just say “What did I get for my £10 last year?” I know I would!

The scaffolding industry already has one voice – it’s called the NASC. Membership is optional and all of the top scaffolding contractors in the UK are members. (My opinion) Our industry is also served by several umbrella unions.

The NASC have produced (or help produce) an agreed SSOW & a technical scaffolding manual for tube & fitting scaffolds. Both of which, especially TG20, cost hundreds of thousands of pounds and have been ratified by the HSE.

Nobody is forcing anyone to adhere to these documents. Anyone is quite welcome to produce their own scaffolding manual or a SSOW manual. To start from scratch, would probably cost a couple of million quid in my reckoning.

Clearly the SCCR need the NASC on side if they are going to achieve or
change anything in this industry. Don't like advanced guardrails? Fine! Come up with a better idea. Don't like TG20? Do your own manual - But I doubt whoever owns the copyright to TG20 will let you use that as a template – Especially if that organisation is constantly critising and bad-mouthing them!

So what is the SCCR? Is it a scaffolders union? Is it an industry voice? Does it supply technical guidance? How many members does it have? 100? 150? Why all the secrecy? I find it all a little bit pompous and aloof if I’m honest.

After all that I have read about it on this forum, I can't work it out. I can't even look on their website because it's members only! At least the NASC website is open to all.....

You won't be getting my tenner!

fcuking hell phil we actually both think along the same wave length

there is not much more i can add to that except

the nasc website does have a members only area , which in my opinion i dont think any organisation claiming to be dedicated to improving an industry should have a members only area all good things should be available for all to see regardless of size of company or bank balance.

the s.c.c.r in my opinion would be better off approaching nasc and saying look we want to be the people who give you the feedback and input directly from the coalface, IE the men who all these decisions directly affect.

i also think that the nasc does things that it thinks is best and seems to have a kinda closed group of people and companies that directly make a fortune from all the nasc stuff . and you now have big companies saying if you not nasc you cant tender, which is border line illegal as the nasc is actually getting these big companies to do this.

but by an large it will take a massive effort to surpass them and many many years to do so, so in my opinion the s.c.c.r would be better off approaching the nasc and asking to be the voice of the workers , i also think the nasc and hse would benefit from the s.c.c.r aswell

Judging by Steve Gregory's comments on his sg4:10 training thread - not the scaffs!

If you judge them on Steve's thread they are out for themselves. I have asked a few times how many members do they have and never get a response. Not sure what the big secret is but it's all very cloke and dagger.

commarade this comment has rattled me to be honest I have worked for firms who have forced us to do training at our own cost or in our own time.

Done work on a powerstation and they told me that they would take me on but get my own safety passport first and then when I started I had to do the site induction withoiut being paid.

Thought they are to be our voice but sounds more like this is not the case but would join we need to be united again like we were in the early days,

Very true, as I asked a few posts back.

I think after his comments earlier, Steve Gregory's position is unattainable if the SCCR are to be taken seriously.

That's not true...

In your opening post you said .."best done on weekends so then you dont have to pay your workforce whilst having the training"

On post number #8 when I questioned it you said..."i dont have to pay them owt. there all subbies.lol"

Your appalling grammar aside, it's a disgusting attitude.

TG20 was £135,000 and its being looked at again due to the new windcode. SCCR only need £13,500 paying members for this. Can see that can you. Ill bet 13 or less is what they have now. I'm sure ill send someone a tenner i have never met.

I was told it cost £600,000 by an NASC commitee member.

Some of it was already templated from BS5973.

Either way, it's a lot of £10 subscriptions!

It has been suggested elsewhere on this site that a certain group of individuals have a hidden agenda to undermine the SCCR via the the forum, perhaps even using multiple user names to hijack threads. Personally I thought it was just a touch of paranoia but after reading through this thread I have serious doubts .

As Double Arm quite rightly states this thread was started by Slav in relation to non payment of wages by an agency nothing to do with the SCCR or recent posts by Steve Gregory yet it has been manipulated and deliberately steered off topic.

The annoying thing is the perpetrators seem to be adopting the moral high ground without posting anything constructive.

For the record, I posted #24 BEFORE those comments were made. I admit that I later edited the post slightly, but the original post can clearly be seen in the chain, if you're really interested!

As for threads taking a different turn, I've made over 700 posts on this forum and the vast majority of them aren't restricted to 'welcome mate'. I can say whatever I like about anyone, or any orginisation - as long as my comments are not offensive, defamatory or simply untrue. Just because you do not agree with someone's comments does not give you the right to lecture them about what they say.

Lastly, I apologised to SG on Friday morning.
