Trainee/apprentice in Birmingham?

First off let me say hello. I'm Liz, I'm 24 and in desperate need of a change of career. I've had a look around and an office job just isn't for me. I need to get stuck into something and get my hands dirty!

I know I'm a girl and this is a blokes job, but the more I think about getting a job in scaffolding, the more I want it! I find myself looking at it when I go past and wondering how they did it. I even missed a bus once so I could watch some guys putting some up by the bus stop! Haha.

So anyways. I'm looking for a trainee position or an apprenticeship, or anything full time to get my foot in the door.

I'm extremely hard working, reliable and eager to learn and earn! I can lift my fair share of weight, so I'm hoping that won't be an issue. Im also used to working long physical days. So if your looking for someone to pass on your knowledge to, Who won't let you down, I'm the one!

I am sorry my darling, but it IS the issue.
This trade is as hard as it gets, even for men and you are handling weights all day long, on jobs that can be hundreds of feet in the air, exposed to all the elements .
Do you still really wish a career in the hardest physical game of all?

never met a woman scaff ive been in the game 30 yrs but i suppose theres got to be a first good luck girl

A very sexist reply. The sort of things that keeps the UK in the dark ages. Even the Arabs have moved with the times and some Arab states even allow women to drive cars.You will regularly see women working on construction sites in parts of Asia.Its this type of attitude that prevents women from furthering themselves.

Anyway welcome to the forum gorgeous. I have 2 sugars in my tea.;)

OH please.
I am talking the physical facts about the game, not trying to woo her with a second rate brew from some char wollah.:laugh:
If she is up to it and can overcome the physical hardships of the trade, then good luck to her.
I was only pointing out what could turn out to be a baptism of fire.....:p
ps.you might strike lucky there girl. Brum seems to be busy there at the mo.

was a female Scaff on conoco in1995,,,, and if the grey matter serves me right, think vange had a female Scaff on coryton the same yr.. good luck lizzie, and no matter what some blokes think, if you want it,go for it girl..think Stella fella will be able to verify the women, if not 2 that worked on the shutdown..

Benchmark had a female scaff on the East London Line she was better than some of the blokes, smoked roll ups too.
 
Welcome to the forum Lizzie, I hope that you find a company to give you a start. No reason why a determined person shouldent get on in this Industry.
 
Thanks for the mostly positive replies! I've emailed a few companies over the past few week with a mere single reply offering to show me around, but even that guy hasn't replied back!

I might not look it but I'm a tough nut and am not scared of a hard days graft. Try a few days in a freezer lobbing stock about, that will clear the lug holes out! Weather doesn't scare me, nor does heights, or builders bums!

I know I've got to start at the bottom and build my way up ('scuse the pun) but if that means lugging the metal about and making tea then I'm game!
 
Just had a looks at their website and there was nothing that would be suitable for me. =[ there has got to be something somewhere! Haha

Why not just go to a small local scaffolding company and ask them? Tell them you will labour for a day for free to show them you are physically fit.
Dont take any notice of people telling you that you have to be some sort of superman to handle scaffolding. Its a knack and about balance and thought rather than about brute strength.
 
SGB used to have a girl who worked for them as a scaffolder in Brum. I think she worked on the Bullring shopping centre.

FYI - SGB are now called Harsco.

yeah she was on oylmpic when i was down there sure shes in the benchpress (benchmarks news paper thing) and i may of bene told a liek i dont know but her hubby is her lab :laugh: good on her

tek it ya never come across benchmark scaffolding Marra, worked for um when was living in Yorkshire ..
