You need to do the NG persons test, it's touchscreen and takes an hour or two. You don't need any training to do this as it takes you through the modules before the test

Once you have passed that you have 30 days (although this is never enforced) to take the assessment of your choice.

There are 3 different categories:- overhead lines, tunnels and sub-stations.

You'll also need a verified A&D certificate for grid work that needs to be updated every 2 years.

You're then good to go.
 
I think the ticket your after is BESC, basic electrical safety competence, my mates on at lyndons and he mentioned they needed scaffs for grid work Manchester branch.

if you love humpping and sweating and being stuck out on a field out of no where like a scarecrow all over the country!!! then overhead lines are for you!!! if you want a steady and more relaxed day go down the substation route. but cant see any work starting on the substation route untill late september october

This is true. Essential maintenance only until after the Paralympics.

Outage season will then be condensed - so will be bundles of grid work.
