I've been scaffolding for around 14 years now and getting the classic old age symptoms(my backs all but given up),thing is where to go from here?
Does anyone know what paths to take for estimating or design?
Any help would be appreciated.

I know how you feel mate.
Im only 30 and i feel f.ucked... bad back, severe Tennis Elbow - in both arms.

Id hate to think how im gonna feel when im 40 or even 50, lol.

Design and Safety are both 2 areas that need ex-Scaffolders to go for, as the drawings we use are never that good, nor are they ever 'Scaffolding Specific' (as in regards to looking better in paper, then actually trying to build them from said drawing) and Safety Officers... well - they have the common sense of a retarded gold fish.

But i believe both jobs require extensive training, exams and ofcourse money to do.

go offshore or a shipyard and do fook all , just make the numbers up,

a weight lifting belt is a short term answer.

Best bet do your advanced inspection course cheep course but affective, try get on a blue book job and potter about tagging jobs For good money and the hrs.that then should be good enough for you to fund the safety side Or what ever direction you wish to take.
Best of luck as scaffolding is a trap ie there isn't many jobs out there what pay the money your used to without major training.

First thing is as already stated, get the back sorted. In the mean time get to the design forum and read bmb's thread on starting out with designing but to be honest it looks a long hard drawn out affair but what else did you get that was worth while easy? There are also lots of threads regarding inspectors and elf and safety but most give a range of opinions. Designing is the way to go but the long hard road is not for every one.

are you still down the yards Allan:laugh::laugh::laugh:
na mate , back on the schools i told you before . i needed the 39 hour job as my son had a fit that no fookers been able to explain yet . its not too bad money for the hours and im getting a few courses out of them . you still in the other yard ? . mcnulties got a big job starting january

Cheers for the replies, had my back sorted when it went 5 years ago and using a weight lifters belt weakens the back in the long term but helpful for the short.I need one of those elastic backs my mates got, after one day off he's cured!

Good point elroy, I was going to post a similar warning but decided against it but good you already know to stay away from the belt.
