He was taken on as an apprentice fred. Dont get me wrong he's a good kid and works hard but my beef is this kid will become a part 2 in less thsn two years with very little spanner time.

It's the same with all trades for the newly qualified. Everyone learns more once they are let loose ib the big wide world.

I was a lab for 6-9mths before i was given a spanner al, and even then it was do that double up or do that single up. I bet it was 12-18mths before i was given a full belt, i was beasted as a young scaff and tgat makes me the scaff i am today and i wouldn't change it.

We pretty much still do the same but when I step back and look I wonder if it's the best way. I don't think it is being honest.

You probly enjoyed beasting. :D Got my spanna's on the first week, wasnt a big deal back then.

I've seen your work fred, you could do with a bit more tuition...lol lol

Joints in same bays not spliced, single board and no handrail....lol lol

practicably speaking I only had 2x8's 2 dubs an a butt. :toung: that my learned friend is good enough:cool:

Anyway, give the apprentices a spanna from day one, some might surprise you, dogs handrails trannies shouldnt be too challenging. lol

There's plenty when you scratch the surface Den. The big city slickers do like their system but I see more yellow jelly than cup lok. I think tube will all but dissappear in my life time whether we like it or not.

I'm beginning to think you are spot on with that Fred.

Im not disagreeing with you fred....but i havnt got time to let them do it, or go back and put it right when i can do it right first time......its a harsh game of ours.

I can see that, your there to earn a living and a profit for the company, doesnt take long to do a quick check. Perhaps apprentices need to start with an old timer, adaptions. Simple works.:wondering:

Bit of encouragement makes em or breaks em,and takes some of the load perhaps.
Remember the time I had 4 all with a spanna, one now part 2 the others found something else lol

They used to do the cecol at Bircham Fred but now its a 2 week induction then much just the usual process of part 1 and 2 except that they get 3 weeks for each then a final 2 weeks assessment. I think that's it, might just be a week for assessment. I used to know when I missed the boys that went but now it's just a relief to see the back of them for a bit. ;)

Wasn't the original idea of the CECOL that lads were given a brief introduction to different construction activities like, scaffolding, steel fixing, roofing etc and then they chose the subject they wanted to specialise in?

I think so hswt, they were still the closest our trade ever got to an apprenticeship as far as I could tell anyway. I was always quite jealous especially in the early years as I struggled to get the right experience and training.
