Days have gone for that fella try going in as a lab then after 6 months maybe
See how you like it....
Not as easy as it looks lol, then if you do and you impress the gaffer maybe approach him see if they will take you on as trainee and start funding your first course if not then save and put yourself thought it.
Scaffolding is not a good trade to be in ATM due to lack of work but best of luck for the future.

Hi and welcome to the forum, things are dire in the scaffolding industry at the moment, firms are laying off experienced scaffolders never mind training them, my advise would be to look for another career away from construction, but if your heart is set on becoming a scaffolder get a copy of your local yellow pages and personally go and see all the supervisors/managers you can, hopefully you could strike gold. Best of luck anyway

Check your local phone book for all the local scaffold companies, get the addresses and get round all their depots. Don't ring them they probably get a dozen phone calls evey day with people looking for work and its easy to turn down a voice over the phone. You need to show up in person, explain you don't want to be leaving school straight into the benefit system , you want to earn a living not be a statistic. Any company that sees you have potential might just take a gamble and give you a chance.

hello is that rainham in kent or essex

Hi Nick, give me a call tuesday on 01708 735073. We're a roofing company in Romford with our own scaffold division. We put our guys (the good ones!) through their tickets. We may have an opening soon for a labourer.

(If its Rainham in Essex? - I myself live near Rainham in Essex, tbh.)
Theres plenty of Scaffolding firms around Rainham.

But to be fair, theres better jobs out there then Scaffolding.
You can train as an Electrician and you'll not only be able to work in the warm and dry, almost all year round, the money is about the same as what Scaffolders get, if not more and you'll be able to do plenty of privates to make even more money.

Also, you wont have to break your back and you can be a sparky at 60... Scaffolding at 60 will be a real ball ache.

Gary, there is plenty of firms out there that will take apprentices, phone every one of them in your area, i know for a fact that they can't get enough in the north east and every course for the CITB (CONSTRUCTION SKILLS) is fully booked, but there are places available in birchham etc,
whether companies are laying off etc they will take apprentices as they get good funding so stick in bud and get on the phone, or even better go and see them,
don't be embarrassed they will be ok and like the keenness ;)

good luck bud

you sure your a scaffolder J and not a spark in cognito :suspicious:

Im a Scaffolder, always have been... man and boy. :)
But the way we're treated, the shiite we have to put up with and the well well underpaid wages we have to settle for dont exactly make this job very glamorous.

Theres loads of jobs out there that are better then this game.
Saddens me to say it, but its true mate.

Best of luck Nick! Current situation aside, it's a great "trade" to get into if you can. At 16 if you get in under the wing of a good scaff, it'll test you both mentally and physically every day with a lot of good stories you can tell your grandkids.:cheesy:

fair play to this kid for wanting to do something as hard as scaffolding, as we all know we all had to start some where...a lot of 16 yrs kids cant be bothered to get out of bed theses days let alone being pissed through wet by 8 in the morning unloading 10 ton of kit...

good on you mate....but like it been said have a look at sometime else first.....would not have any son of mine getting into this game nowadays....

looks like u got loads of good sensible advise but would like to add mine anywaynget in contact with the citd directley there are many ways they can help you with a goverment funded apprenticeship but you will need a cib registered company to act as your sponsor-they will also benifit from gov funding and get a cash incentive to help you if you cant find a company the citb may be able to put u in contact with one, the apprenticeship will take 2 yrs in which time you will be funded to attend several residential courses most prob at birtchen , if in this time u decide to leave its like the shows say "u leave with nuffin"- BUT REMEMBER TO BE REALISTIC there is always a realistic chance are gonna be used and abused by your sponsor often at minimum wages- u gonna do all the **** no one else wants to..be hot and dusty in the summer and cold and wet in the winter, with little thx and always being shouted at, but if uget to the end of the 2 yrs will b a cert basic 2 scaffolder, and if we are to beleave the ******** the gov tells us will be just about be coming out of recession, then you will be ideally sited to ask for you own wage, no teenage attitude, common sence and a sence of humour are a most to succeed...it can be done cos my sons done it and within 5 yrs now has his A ticket and hgv2, so good luck:D

there isn't anything else............ full stop.
i have two sons who i didn't want to get into the game and their mother certainly didn't, however i would rather them do this than sit in the house and smoke dope all day,
i have been fortunate to get both of my sons into work though good employers and the apprenticeship scheme, the eldest now 18 now his his part 2 (still not a scaff ) but gets up at 6.30 every morning and has everything he wants , new trainers every week sergio taccini this lacoste that,he loves it and knows nothing different AGS the lot. the youngest now 16 keen as mustard will do exactly the same, the reason being they know what the work ethic is all about, they have watched me get up every morning wind sleet and snow with the odd bit of sun thrown in and seen what i have got out of the game: everything i have ever wanted.
excuse me lads if you want to be a sparky or a bricky go and find another forum because your not scaffs if you don't believe in what you do how on earth will your kids.
THE BEST GAME IN THE WORLD
