what do you need to start your own job agency

the scaffolding jobs on here are a real kick in the balls moneywise, i would like to know what the agencies are charging the employers, if they are advertising at £10 i bet they are asking for £20, robbing gets, lets stat our own run by scaffolders for scaffolders
 
Thats very true nowadays scaffolders are being exploited left right and centre. These agencys are just a short cut to get guys in then bunk em off at the earliest convieniece. Do we need liability insurance to start an agency.

Good Morning Gents,

Well you have tickled me with your knowledge when it comes to us recruiters, I can assure you we dont make £10 an hour, if we did I would be very wealthy!! Agencies work on around 12-15% depending on whats required and how specialist. I know that my company is the only one in the UK that is soley Scaffold & Access and being a labour manager for a massive Scaffolding firm I have knowledge and the no how. My business partner is Mark an ex Scaff so he knows more than anybody what we can get away with. So stop registering with two bit companies and call us 01709 376386. I have jobs in swindon, oxford, gatwick and uxbridge £120 a shift poss Saturdays.

lee from forefront sounds like a sound guy but hes human like all of us hes just thinkin about cash not really bothered about the men he hires. trust me ive worked for him the story is typical but shocking.:cry:

just rung you answer machine again and is this £120 A DAY FOR 8HRS OR 10HRS and is it before tax or after YOU DONT SAY what about travel money lodge money overtime rates you dont mention any of these as we all know when we work over 8 hr in a day its over time rate after 8hrs do you pay this overtime rate
 
here,here orac your bang on the button most or the agencies up my way ( Edinburgh) are robbing you blind and they do charge £5- £10 above the rate you get, they would not make money otherwise what i would like to Know is do you need a licence to start up.

sorry mark i need to correct you there, what about SSUK LTD he is a scaffold labour only supplier, i worked for him for most of last year on £17 per hour, i have worked for you many times over the years.:D

like i said i think we should start our own agency cant be too difficult, we must all know some hirers within the job, lets look into it properly & put a few feelers out, i think i will propose it to the newly formed commitee, anyone think its a goer?;)
 
If the Agency is poor then the word will soon get around and lads will vote with their feet ultimatley.

In regard to the money situation...my personell opinion is if you are happy with the rate your recieving...then who gives a flying f*ck what the agency puts on top...thats their business after all.

No offence meant to anyone by the way.

yeah come on lee answer the questions is it 120 before or after tax is it an 8 hour day any digs money and wots the over time rate:nuts:;)
 
couple of things, first of all forefront, i've never worked for them so can't comment, but in my experience all agency staff or "recruitment consultants" as they like to call themselves couldn't lie straight in bed. They will say anything to get you to site, then baiscally your on your won. when they've got work they ring you up like your their best mate, when theirs nowt, you become persona non grata. They will slice money off the rate with no thought for the people who are going out to work for them, just to get the job and then chop the rate of the bloke going to work, so your taking the loss no them. They couldn't give a ******** about you as long as you get the timesheet signed. they're on a par with estate agents, double glazing salesman and vampires when it comes to integrity.

IMHO They are nothing but parasites who are fcuking the construction industry and are largely responsible for the influx of cheap foriegn labour and the derisory rates we are now working for. They haven't even got the decency to pay the men working for them their wages, They pay through a composite company and charge you £20 a week for the privilge.

Secondly, anyone starting up a labour only company today can expect the following. Clients not paying on time, blokes not turning up, the client poaching your men, long hours, little reward. you need PLI, which is expensive, a good understanding of the politics of scaffolding, the hide of a rhino and the paitience of jobe. but if you are still thinking about good luck, you'll need it.
 
I agree with gunslinger757 but why tar the same brush with everyone?

I have had the same experiancese with agency work. I have also worked long term for large companies & have been shafted. Have never had a day off sick or been late but never been looked after!

I have seven lasd working for me in the South West who will work seven days a week in the rain. I am expanding to South Wales & sussex next. Good rates of pay etc. I work on a low profit margin because I wish to make a name for myself. Good rates of pay for a fair days work & the customer comes first!!!!!!!!!.

To set up your own agency you will need to register as a contractor under the CIS, also with the tax office for PAYE. This will cover you if you pass on work to self employed or employed staff. From what I've found out so far you have to run two companies side by side if you wish to place temporary staff & permanent placing. You will also have to register under the data protection act. It would be a good idea to affiliate with a trade body!!. Most run courses in regards agency work & once you have done one you are able to use them for advice etc. A web site is essential to promote the jobs etc & then setting up advertising with industry mags & employment papers & web sites. All in all quite a lot to do. If you have a office where staff will visit you will need to cover that by public liability insurance but you don't need public liability for the placements because the customer or contractor will have to have that covered. In rare cases when they do not have cover for sub-contractors then you would have to take out a policy for that placement which would be built into the costings. If you employ staff you will also need employee liability insurance. This is the basics covered I think!!!:D

ok i've got cis had it for years, i have a seperate company set up & a website, just need to get some lads on books & get in with the employers, seems to me that within the next 3-5 years we will all be agency workers, employers save £££'s in NI, holiday pay & a load of other payments, its a no brainer for employers, get lads in when needed, then lay them all off again once jobs done.

Short term sub contractors cost more. Only large sites will use a large amount of sub contractors but again that is short term work. Other firms may use sub contractors when the work load is at a stage they require more staff without having to employ full time. That saves on contracts & employment law. At the moment we supply scaffolders for sick cover, short term contract work etc, we will even supply HGV drivers which has always been an area for sub contracting or agency drivers. Also a large area of our work is price work so the client can not over spend as everything has a value prior to starts & completion.

So I can't see firms running with just sub contractors in fact there is a large number of firms that won't use us at all.:(
