is it good business ??

Might not be too bad as long as they have paid him his 40 hours but it depends on length of service.

Should have been told at start of shift.

Dunno mate, I very much doubt it, he just wouldn't answer the phone if you were waiting to get picked up and nobody showed hahahaha

Youll get no notice nowdays. Reason, to stop unhappy chappies from causing any damage or nicking off site. Company I worked for use to escort men off site.

Totally agree, Payed in lieu of notice is the norm now, there is a enormous ammount of sabotage, that could be carried out by even 1 disgruntled Employee.

Wish I Had A Penny For Every Time Iv Been Punted, Some With Respect And Some Without, Nobody Minds Getting Paid Off (I Dont Anyway) If There Is No Work They Cant Keep You Its Nothing Personal, But Theres Ways Of Being Paid Off.

Being laid off is part and parcel of Scaffolding.
Seems to be happening more and more often though nowadays.

I have personally made 90 men redundant in the past 2 months. Not a pleasant job at any time but worse around Christmas time.
Always done at the start of shift, letters and redundancy estimates all prepared. It has all gone extremely well without incident. All have received redundancy and severance pay ranging from $20,000 to $70,000 depending on the guys length of service. So that is a big softener for the guys.
Our great HR department has made 1 man redundant and made a complete hash of it. They have actually been unable to find further work for even 1 man whereas we on the project have found jobs for 12 with the possibility of getting alternative work for 10 more.
Who else on the forum would agree that HR (staffed with university educated people) has contributed nothing to the construction industry?
I have a further 34 employees to make redundant over the next few weeks and will have to make myself redundant at the end.....no payout for me though!!!!!
