At SGB we once had a graduate come into the game as a future fast track regional manager/director, he had graduated with a degree in horticulture, what the fxxking good is that, after 3 months the plank still could not tell the difference between a base plate and a band and plate

For a trainee surveyor/estimator these wages are very poor in comparison to the £20-£25000.00 on offer in the current construction jobs market for London/South East. Peanuts and Monkeys come to mind.

We are looking for someone from college with A- Levels not university.

This is a surveyor/estimator for scaffolding not a Main Contractor QS with a degree in surveying.

This would ideally suit someone as their first job out of school.

Regards

You would be struggling up here in the North to get anybody to work for the money they are paying

BJCSL, £250.00 pw. still think you are baiting your hook too lean even in these austere times. After all you are hireing someone that will eventually be responsible for your companies income.

We currently have a trainee who started exactly the same way.

He has just started his third year.

After day release for 2 years at college and progressing well he has had in the region of 5 progression pay rises.

This is a starting salary only and with a 4 year training programme that will include college and pay advances built in to it.

Thanks

May be a better option for some than going to University and getting tens of thousands of pounds in to debt?

Ok. Understand where your coming from now. Hope you find the right candidate.

Thanks.

Trainee estimator

Good way to get in to the industry. I did a similar thing back in the 1970s with GKN with a few differences. The GKB programme was a culture shock for me coming from banking but involved extensive experience at the sharp end. Working in the yard, working on-site with scaffs on all kinds of different jobs from support jobs to bridges and then a few months with the engineers before I was allowed to be mentored by the company's best estimators. Once I was out on my own I progressed to regional estimator then manager and contracts manager with other companies before dropping out to what I do today. I don't think you can beat the kind of training I had but it wouldn't be for everyone straight out of school or desk job.

Hi Ian.
As you say this is a good intro to the trade and is very similar to my own start with Stephens and Carter in 1970. My only query was for the starting pay which is lower than currently being offered in other sections of the industry. This I know from having seen a large no of const'n trade job specs in the past months and these did not require a BSc or HNC as a pre-requisite. However BJCSL knows his jobs market and I am sure all will prove to be ok in the end.

That money is f.ucking shiit.
School leaver or not, do you think being young makes someone a total mug???

Don't apply then Jason

It is actually 27% above the minimum wage for an 18 year old after probation.

If it was so bad would not have received over 30 c.v's so far from!

Thanks for your helpful comments though

well i think its a cracking opportunity,
i am all for good wages but this is better than most with good prospects hopefully.
i hope you get someone very keen and eager to learn

How much do YOU earn then?
Is it also only 27% above the Minimum Wage?

You have received over 30 CV's because you know full well that people, especially School/College leavers are desperate to get on the working ladder.

Really ?? Thought most school levers were more interested in servin weed or crack up init

Only yours cause it has ginger hairs

Jason

Your point is totally invalid.

I have worked in the industry over 20 years and what i earn is what this potential candidate could earn in the future.

With not many jobs around, being offered a full and comprehensive training programme and having the potential to more than double your salary in a 3 year period is a great opportunity.

Training is all well and good, but all the training in the world dont pay the bills.
Your offering a job that barely pays more then stacking shelves in Tescos...

Your intentions may be sincere, but i personally think the salary being offered is terrible for what the job will entail.

Wish I had maybe seen an advert offering such an opportunity before I went on to the sites and maybe I would have a back left now.

Good job, good prospects, good training and good advancement, the big bucks isn't always the right choice.
