Scaffolders - barnsley, south yorkshire s71

i used to always work out my own gear, or someone in the squad would, FFS is that not what its all about.

ive known contracts managers that have been in the game 30 year and cant order gear correctly, because every squad errects differently, thats why they ask you?
just my opinion?

Part and parcel of the job for the scaffolder to work out the gear for the job.
You had to do it years ago at CITB get the gear for a 13 foot independent with 1 boarded lift. Get yer kit first then start erecting and not allowed to get anything else. That was part 1 stuff. I cant believe scaffs rely on contracts managers to do that for them these days.
Thats 2 men jacked jobs in the last week on the forum. One cos he was expected to work out his own gear. The other because he was expected to walk a few long uns.:D:D

Same as Jackdan. All the gaffer used to give to us was a homemade sketch. You obviously had to work out the gear needed for the job ,load the wagon then of you went.Soon got the hang of it,cos i was sick of the bollickings for coming back to the yard due to shortage of gear to finish the job of.

Remember them days well Haverspanner, wished i had a pound for every time i had to strip the racking system cos was short of gear.Even when you said to yourself better put a bit of extra gear on just in case, you still ended up stripping the racking system. It took about 2 minutes to strip it and about an hour to put it back up x that by lots of times.

We used to make ladder beams with butts if needs be.
These youngsters would be on the blower for alloy beams.

Jackdan...fooking spot on...I get these phone calls quiet regular....

I personally think its a responsibility issue, I dont want to sound like an old fart BUT the recent generation of scaffolders and the generation as a whole dont want to accept responsibility for any of their actions, so they go into a switch off mode were things like Initiative and Problem Solving are required because that then means they would have to take a descisive action which of course takes us full circle back to responsibily and they dont want that, any problems they have automatically become someone else's i.e. Their Supervisor/Manager

:D

Hi PW.
Spot on with that. Seems no-body wants to take the bull by the horns & make the decision any more, but when it works out & everythings ok,they're the first 1's wanting the credit & a pat on the back. Even though they just stood in the background & whinged that, they weren't shown this or that at college.
