I wondered if I could pick the brain of some of our roof edge protection specialists. We have been asked to price to supply scaffold round quite a large commercial steel building. It is surrounded with lower fragile roofs and all sorts of plant, large vat's and heavy truck's moving around. I think it would be better served with just a few loading bay's and hand rails. My question is, has anyone got any ideas on fixing solutions for this sort of building as to be honest I have only ever done it off beams?

yep and if he cant help u then ring me

ok Scaffy, share the knowledge, what do you use for these types of buildings?

I know how to put a hand-rail on, just wondered what was the best system in use for the steel clad buildings. I don't fancy peeling back the cladding every 6" or so and wondered if we had moved forward with this.

I have to be honest Paddy.........I would never call you for work......now you fook off.:D

Strip and re-sheet just the top layer. I don't think we could have anything actually sitting on the roof and figured screwing some sort of bracket to the wall and punching up. I'm just not very sure what's available to screw into the steel frame and also bursting the wall cladding will be a bit of a nightmare.

sounds nightmare , what do you actually class as fragile roof below it , is that a definate no no to erect off that.

is the plant and vats no good to use as a tie in, so you can then maybe throw a few beams about.

erecting off low level roof must be as easy as taking sheets off surely, i take it you will have to cross the low level to remove wall sheets anyhow.

how good is cheery picker access , are they and how are they putting nets up inside .

I'm not entirely sure exactly what the roof is made from but you can stand on it when the top sheet is removed. The fragile lower roofs are just tin shaks protecting pieces of plant and plant operators from the weather and would no way be able to support a man let alone scaffold. There are some straight runs for an independent but not many. The cherry picker access is good as is the surrounding ground but I wouldn't expect them to be erecting nets below a solid roof. There is quite a big office system on the top level of this building and they wont be wanting their normal activities interrupted. I could maybe use strategically placed loading towers then beams to form a rail but I was hoping that maybe someone would have experience of using the walls to support a puncheon. A couple of the lower roofs run the full length of an elevation and we would definitely have to use a cherry picker to over come them anyway. Other than that it's a piece of p i s s.

Anchorman System

Hi

Can you use one of the proprietory edge systems like this one above from Anchorman Roof Systems. - Google for more infor.

You may be able to hire this.

There must be some positons supporting the roof where you can form an weighted "A" frame system and span between ?

Sounds like a right mare. Good luck.

AOM, There used to be a fitting years ago that was used for tying scaffolding to cladded buildings. You removed the nut from the sheeting bolt and but the fitting on and replaced the nut and tightened then tied the scaffold in with it. It was used for horizontal ties, its so long ago now that I saw one, I cant remember if it could be used vertically which you would need for guardrail posts and if so they would have to be used in pairs.

neilb thats a great bit of kit mate i could have used that a lot of times over the years if i knew about it

Is that the one that fits over the parapet and you tighten up, and put a 5ft in for the guardrail post, there great for roof protection.

Aom did you say steel building mate ?
If so Apollo have a screw type that we used for tying to steel bit like a tech screw but they have a good SWL used to put them in out of a cherry pick and install the handrail above ground level ment no one had to walk on the roof.

Never seen them before Phillo, look the business, any idea of the price,
