Q&A

Why can't self funding individuals claim the NVQ achievement grant in the same way companies can ?

Why don't the NVQ assessors actually get off there arses and assess candidates on site ?

I'm not sure on the claiming the money back podger so I won't comment on that . As for NVQ Assessors getting of there arse's and doing on site assessment , we would love to be able to do this and stop every person either off the dole or direct from prison coming st8 on a part 1 course. Prior assessment is seriously needed. But on the training centres side if they don't get them through the courses then they don't get paid.

YES it all about MONEY and f*** the industry.

And they wonder why the SCCR was formed. It's time for CHANGE.

Why did we not get grandfather rights with the new scaffold inspection tickets ?
Surely Qualified Scaffold Supervisors should have had this
and why another card, why can't trades be added to your card?

Hi Ian

A question for your meeting:-

Since the introduction of TG:20 08. The standard designs for basic scaffolds includes a facade/sway brace that goes accross 2 bays and 2 lifts.

Design engineers working to TG:20 08 seem to have taken this on board, and most of the design scaffolds I have worked to since seem to show this same pattern.

I can understand from a design piont of view that this configuration works best, however from a manual handling and safety piont of view (and surely scaffold designers have safety responsibilities under the CDM regs), this is the only tube in the structure where you have to fit it on the external edge and so should be as short a tube as possible i.e. 9ft tubes instead of 18ft tubes, to save leaning over the handrail and holding in position until fixed a tube that is twice as long as it needs to be.

I know this means a bit of plan bracing but I personally would rather this than fitting long tubes, and think that this should be the default method and not put in as an alternative.

Thanks

Hi Podger
re:- your questions.

This I believe is because it's an incentive for companies to send trainees to the college in the first instance. My company still pays the trainees wages in full whilst they are there.and it is set off against the C.I.T.B levy that we pay for being members of the organisation.

Why don't the NVQ assessors actually get off there arses and assess candidates on site ?

Why indeed !!!!!!!!

small companies employ and pay trainees wages , supply ppe , etc etc until they finish apprenticeship, obviously the trainee hasnt been the most productive of workers during this time as he learns his trade, so finishes his apprenticeship then immediately jumps ship to a bigger company paying better money, as they do.

the grant recieved probably means the small company is actually on a loss as it barely covers travel and wages to all the college courses and stuff.

my question is this, where is the inncentive for more smaller companies to take more apprentices on, when they cant match other big companies wages to keep hold of their trainees.

maybe a lot more would employ more apprentices more often if they were getting more in return for two years of head aches an very little else

I agree XxIANxX long gone are my days, when i got escorted off a certain scaffolders premises in Lincoln. Feck em .

Slowly slowly catchie monkey

The off the job attendance grant (£35 per day) is funded by the CITB levy and as self funding individuals do not directly pay into the levy then I agree they are not entitled to claim this .

However the NVQ achievement grant is government funded (£500 level 2 and £700 level 3) and as self funding individuals pay into the fund in the form income tax then surely the should be entitled to claim the grant via the awarding body in the same way companies can even if the do not pay the CITB levy

only after 8 metres for the face / sway brace to go through 2 bays though . when i went to scaffold school the closer to 45 degrees the brace was the more effective it was . going through 2 bays means your no where near
