A NEWCASTLE company has secured a £150m oil contract that could see more than 1,000 jobs go to workers in the North East.

Offshore Group Newcastle has sealed a deal to build a new oil production platform for US-based Apache Corporation at Wallsend’s Hadrian Yard over a 20-month period.

At its peak the project will require up to 700 direct OGN employees, 150 project management and design professionals and up to 300 on-site outsourced sub-contracted workers.

OGN’s chief commercial officer Craig Melville said yesterday the company expected “almost, if not all” of the workers to come from the North East.

He said: “We expect to attract the high calibre of workforce we need from the region. We know the labour force up here, we’ve worked with them before, and we know they’re capable of delivering.

“We hope all of the sub-contracted services will also come from the local area. There are various companies that have supported this company over the years and they’re well prepared to provide the service we need.” OGN expects to start recruiting at the start of next year for a large number of “blue collar” staff such as pipefitters, welders, platers and riggers, and engineers and project managers will also be needed, as well as sub-contracted painters and scaffolders.
