Part 1 Scaffolder's requried in Liverpool Carbon60 - Liverpool

no not at all but it will make you officialy competent, cant just say part1s all as good as part2/advanced as it leaves the door open for young teenagers who have just started in the game an have a part1 card to go up the scaffold, its dangerous. only street/cowboy firms will leave part 1s unattended,i know the company i work for and the site im on it simply wouldnt be allowed and rightly so.

My point is that a card does not make anyone a better scaffolder, experience does and that's why the older boys got grandfather rights. cards was only brought in for money making reasons..

Also jiggaman I'm actually sent out sometimes to do a job with a certain part 2, he's been doing it as long as me if not less, he's just in front of me with courses. Me and the labourer basically do the job because this part 2 the bosses son is not capable or confident enough with anything that needs thinking about... he is only around on his phone incase!!!!!!! And this boy will be advanced soon enough lol

bigdog im the same, i work with boys on advanced cards who have just done it for the sake of saying theyr advanced now theyr getting shown up when they cant get jobs done.

They don't automatically make you a better Scaffolder. That much is obvious. But what would be the alternative? Have no card system? Anyone could lie about experience. It's not foolproof but it does give you more of an idea of someones experience and skill level than not having them. I just think the training and assessments for the cards needs to be improved.

That's an easy one wp make the duration between courses longer not 6 months and a year but they won't do it as its less £££ coming in mate

Exactly. I also think the actual training courses should have smaller groups too, so the lads have more time with the instructor and can't hide in the group. You're obviously limited to what you can learn in a 2 week period anyway but this would surely help. But that again boils down to less money for the training firms.

there's 2 much Riff raff, foreigners and wasted potential going through the CISRS system and I totally agree with the lads when they say that a high percentage of these "Gold card guru's" can't put a nut in a monkeys mouth  the CITB/CISRS need to develop the courses so they can identify that scaffolders can demonstrate technical ability and safe working practices to a satisfactory standard? The current NVQ Level 3 seems to be pretty lenient from what I've seen. Perhaps future scaffs going through an old skool apprenticeship programme might be the answer? Done me no harm.

Great post Rick defining technical scaffolders from other 'scaffolders' would be a good one I myself and the latter I'm afraid least technical bloke I know good worker and able but think God phoned in sick when it was my turn to get a brain lol

Again great post mate

Cheers bro,

I'm more on the management side of things now but worked my way up from the deck. Didn't get off the ground for the first 18months (no joke!) learned the job from the ground up, first and foremost learned to read a job so I knew what and when it was required. My mentor taught me this method and it has never failed me. Some lads get these cards now an think there the b@lloks. I can work with tube and fitting, layher, cuplok, Haki, Van thiel an probably feckin bamboo given half a chance  an there's CISRS courses for all these now  not sure about the bamboo lol also worked in a lot of different environments construction/street work. Oil and gas/offshore petrochemical, wind turbines so came accross a few scaffs from different backgrounds. I found that experience always came out on top :D

Again top post Rick

Your saying about the old school ( I actually put a reference about that in a post recently lol ) and Id have to agree completely that IS the best way

I myself started originally 12 years ago but with breaks, injuries and other stuff added up I've got about 7 years exp I'd say half in tube and half with system and because of age, chopping and changing and working in a more experienced gang ie me passing the gear up my scaffolding certainly has suffered obviously,

Now I've only worked on site work for big firms all the gear no idea a lot I've crossed ( me included but now I'm on a pukka little street firm ( happiest I've been in scaffolding btw) and in many ways im back to basics luckily I'm in a set gang working and above anything else learning from old school scaffolders
