Leeds Arena

Council chiefs today reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring Leeds residents benefit from the training opportunities offered by the city's new arena.
The city council has teamed up with its preferred building contractor for the £80m concert venue, BAM, to launch the Leeds Arena Local Impact Programme.

Under the programme, BAM will have to meet a range of employment and
education targets during its work on the Clay Pit Lane-based arena.

Key aims include:

* Creation of 60 new apprenticeships, with precedence being given to people who have had previous training elsewhere cut short by the recession;
* Provision of 48 weeks of work experience at the arena for 16 to 17-year-olds and 96 weeks for 18 and overs;
* Mentoring small and medium-sized companies to help them compete for sub-contracting work on the arena.

Other spin-offs will include school visits and college workshops as well as support for university research projects.

The arena project's bosses have previously announced they hope it will create more than 100 construction jobs, with many going to residents in Little London and other places near Clay Pit Lane.

Coun Richard Lewis, the council's executive member for city development, said today: "We want to ensure the arena brings real opportunities for those people who live in the areas surrounding it and for the city's construction industry."

Work on the 13,500-capacity facility is due to start in earnest early next year.

Nearly £6m of improvements are also being planned for Woodhouse Lane car park, which is expected to be well used by gig-goers once the venue opens in 2013.

Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward is contributing £10m to the cost of the arena scheme as a whole, with the remainder coming from the council.
