Health and Safety (FUTURE IDEAS)

Was just wondering, what sort of thoughts people have on the health and safety in the future, 5-10+ years or more, what sort of things do you think will come into play?

this is what i think

i can nearly guarantee that in about 5 years or more, there will be a dobule toe board as standard and like we do handrail at 950mm now and a bubble down, (easier for us), will also be a bubble up so thats a triple handrail, and there will be a hard hat, which will be something like a crash helmet, as it has a visor on it, and cant fall off, what do you all think?

Think your bang on there Essex,I personally think any person or trade working on a scaffold should wear a harness,For there own safety,That way they will know what wearing a harness 7 days a week feels like ;)

Just had a 3 hour induction for a new carillion job and amongst the topics was the use of the harness. They want the harness to become a tool of last resort when erecting a scaffold! Instead of clipping on they want systems in place where you do not need to use the harness. Having hand rails installed in the lift above before you get there... crazy things like that. H&S is here to keep us alive, but there comes a point when it just becomes too much!

I expect the hard hat will come in for an update, lanyards for your tools..

The harness is a last resort:D, Most Carillion sites now insist you have a lanyard on your spanner

Probably foam coated spanners. Just incase you drop it on someones head!

CISRS -Healthy Eating Course
CISRS -Help to stop smoking course
CISRS -How to wipe your arse course

Couple years back seen HT scaffolding (Leeds) their scaffolders had a rock climbers helmets , but if you think about it if your clipped in on a independent and you fall....swing back into the job you still gonna want your lid ??

We are an approved Carillion contractor and Ian is right, spanner lanyards are now a must. But Carillions wording is ALL tools at the leading edge, so whats the definition of that. Read it as you will but I can bet your boots some bright spark will say you need you level, tape measure, ratchet etc etc tethered. So what then about fittings, tubes, boards etc????? Wheres it going to stop?

I personally think in a hundred years a special suit would be made that automatically inflates around you like an airbag should you even so much as trip over a twig.

I've asked that same question Dave, this is what gives h&s a bad name. I wonder which college graduate came up with this idea.

Im sure contractors and the HSE stipulate that the use of PPE is the last resort, in my eyes this means that you have to find another way of performing your duties without the use of PPE, if there isnt any other way then PPE comes into force.

I think a major thing to come up in the future is a First Aid course for either the chargehand or everyone who works on sites!

I think everyone will require first aid training. Lets say your working on the street and have a gang of scaffolders and the supervisor is the only one with first aid training. What happens if its the supervisor that requires first aid

999 ??

We wear Petzel helmets with chin straps, thay are climbing/industrial rope access helmets, i cant see why these are not the standard helmets for scaffolders, these give head protection in a fall and lets be honest nothing is going to fall from above if you are the lead scaffolder but a fall is much more likely, i want a helmet that will look afther me if i do take a tumble. My guys on the ground also wear them as they spend most of the day looking up and the chin strap stops them from falling off. Hard hats are fine for builders but lets face it we are pretty much climbers on steel rock faces.

We are the elite of the construction industry the way things are today, without scaffolders nearly every site, powerstation, etc wouldnt be able to work safely.

Like both the head protection and first aid training

A decent helmet that stays on after a fall is a must have piece of kit

The first aid training has being updated recently,an "emergency first aider" qualification is available I think everyone that works on a construction site should have this basic first aid knowledge

I would like an alternative to the wearing of harness all day by scaffs, more collective measures should be investigated.

Red vikings idea of calling 999 is no longer an option under WAHR, provision for rescue and first aid has to be made by the companies undertaking the works

I would also like scaffolders to be trusted more in thier ability to erect scaffolds without the need for harness.I worked the biggest part of my career without a harness and only had two falls in 40 years.First from 12ft harness would not have deployed if I had been wearing one.The second would have killed me if I had being wearing a harness.

I know this is against the grain of current thinking but I honestly feel safer not wearing a harness,I feel constrained and dislike all the snag issues they create

Totally agree Rigger ,I cannot understand why we are not allowed to mitigate on our own . We know the dangers and the best routes to mitigate around them but find ourselves at the mercy of people who have no basic understanding of the logistics involved . I make a habit of not trying to fall and in all my years scaffolding (26) I have yet to see a harness deployed in anger . maybe i have been lucky but there are still to many safety bods justyfing their jobs with crazy safety guidelines .

few years back a guy brought dublin city centre to a standstill, he was swinging a sledge on a scaffold and it flew out of his hands straight through a double decker. imagine if it had a lanyard attached, fortunetely no injuries, but he would have been the first person to gain access to the top deck without using the stairs. think the way things are going, anyone who climbs a ladder will need a ticket. possibly a 1 day course. more money for the h.s. industry.

I have alway said that if i ever fall off a scaffold it will prob be BECAUSE of my harness, always snagging it or getting tangled in the lanyard.
