A dog tag is the informal name for the identification tags worn by military personnel, because of their resemblance to actual dog tags. The tag is primarily used for the identification of dead and wounded along with providing religion (to provide for calling a Catholic Priest or Jewish Rabbi for Last Rites) and essential basic medical information for the treatment of the latter, such as blood type[1] and history of inoculations. Dog tags are usually fabricated from a corrosion-resistant metal or alloy such as aluminum, monel or stainless-steel, although, during wartime, they have been made from whatever metals were available. In the event the member has a medical condition that requires special attention, an additional, red, tag with the pertinent information is issued and worn with the dog tags.

Wearing of the tag is required at all times by soldiers in the field. It may contain two copies of the information and be designed to break easily into two pieces. This allows half the tag to be collected for notification while the other half remains with the body when battle conditions do not allow the casualty to be immediately recovered. Alternatively, two identical tags are issued. One is worn on a long chain around the neck; the second on a much smaller chain attached to the first chain. In the event the wearer is killed, the second tag is collected, and the first remains with the body. Alternatively, some units allow or require each member to wear one laced into their boot in lieu of the second around the neck.

Carrilion have went totally OTT, Tool lanyards, Helmet Lanyards as Allan 666 has just informed us. Every bit of PPE imaginable, Why...... has it anything to do with their current standing regarding H&S:notrust:

They used to think they were the 'Dogs' However:-

Carillion has been fined £185,000 after a worker was run over by a reversing truck on a site in Rochdale.

The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Carillion JM following the incident at the Kingsway Business Park in November 2008.

A Ford Transit was reversing on the construction site when it hit Michael Gresty, of Chadderton.

Carillion JM pleaded guilty to three health and safety offences at Manchester Crown Court and was ordered to pay £9,821 towards prosecution costs.

Gresty was helping to build a new track around a large pond at the business park when he was run over by the truck. The court was told that the 56-year-old was in hospital for four weeks following the incident and is unlikely to ever return to work due to the extent of his injuries.

He lost his left kidney, broke seven ribs, left shoulder and right foot, fractured his spine, dislocated his right hip and required a pin through his right knee. He has lost one inch in height, has four needles in his spine and still suffers constant pain in his back and ribs more than a year later.

The court heard that no one was responsible for guiding the truck, which was regularly reversing up to 400 metres to drop off construction materials for the project. A pedestrian walkway to separate vehicles from pedestrians had also not been marked on the track.

Carillion pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by failing to ensure the safety of workers. It also admitted breaching Regulation 3(1)(b) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 by failing to carry out a suitable risk assessment.

HSE Inspector Neil Martin said: “Michael Gresty is lucky to be alive following this very serious incident and he will never fully recover. His injuries could easily have been prevented if Carillion had followed basic health and safety procedures.

“It is not acceptable that a construction company, which employs 50,000 people around the world, did not carry out the right risk assessment or put a system in place for preventing collisions.

“It would have been simple to mark out a basic pedestrian walkway, using cones and tape, and have someone responsible for guiding reversing vehicles. If Carillion had done this, Michael Gresty would not have suffered agonising injuries.

“I hope this case demonstrates to all companies how important it is to separate pedestrians from vehicles on construction sites.”

Good in theory, however, as i mentioned once before with a simiarlar if not the original idea.

1) What if somebody else has picked up your hat ?
2) When or if (God forbid) there is a accident, the first thing that goes for a burton is your Hard hat.
3) The worst case scenario, Multiple casualties = Multiple hard hats.

Sorry guys i agree with Allan666 on this one.

If anything, go down the MOD route, 'Dog tags' with all info and could even include CISRS and any other info.

just a thought.

The Dog Tag is a much better idea IMO. Hard hats are lost/stolen daily so you'd be left forking out £2.99 for this every time it disappeared.

Some ideas (like the Scaffstep mentioned earlier) sound great in theory until you pick them apart and realise it isn't that great after all.
