There are a couple of reasons that there are hardly any failures, oh you can’t say failure, in NVQ speak, it’s not achieved, however the NVQ, has changed, it’s now being called the Scaffolding Diploma. Diploma, same training, different name, different unit numbers. The main reasons for not failing anyone, is the amount of paper work the assessor has to complete if he fails someone, then the enquiry that follows a failure, the complaints from the scaffold companies, threatening to take their custom else ware. The Instructor / Assessor’s are supposed to be the manager of that course, but they get over-ruled by the centre Lead Instructor or Manager. That’s for adults / private paying trainees.
The youth courses run by the CITB are paid on the end result, so only get paid on achievements, if they put 18 month training in to a trainee and he fails they get nothing from the awarding body. It’s wrong, but it’s all about money.
I agree with Woodsie, the courses should be tougher, to get rid of the chancer’s. Scaffolder’s should get the recognition they deserve, how many times have you erected a job, then the Engineer comes out, say’s your jobs OK, BUT, can you put a few checks here and there or a couple of extra tubes in, justifying his big ££££££ and you get ££, they’re drawing on your knowledge and experience, and they get the praise.
Dico, I'd like a £ for every photo I've binned, I bet I'd be in front?
