Dental nurses get more money than scaffolders, whats the point in doing this job, scaffolders are continually ripped off, the level minimumum rate should be twenty pounds per hour, the use of PPE should be negated, and all people that continually place sanctions on scaffolders are treating scaffolders like slaves, most men adhere to safety measures and have done since the begining of the twentieth century,Scaffolders have and continually see their money decimated by people that go about in shirt and tie, doing no physical work taking a large slice of our earnings driving flash cars taking flash hollidays at our expense, whilst the man doing the job gets ripped off,its easy for a goverment to say tighten your belt ,we cant do any more scaffolding is a hard physical job we are not rewarded for what we do ,every one other than scaffolders and laborours are rewarded,go to a yard load up your not paid for it, brickies have hoddies, a person employed in a non manual role may take a pay cut, we take a pay cut but still do as much intensified labour, but for less, our bodies deteriorate at an alarming rate, i would not recomend any young person have anything to do with a building site or do any scaffolding, why should they venture into a negative, labour intensive slave industry, its worst than school and like being in prison, Germans work twenty seven hours a week for forty hours pay,we are entitled to overtime rates, language is another problem workers talking in a foreign language whilst working along side english speaking workers that cannot understand the foreign language ,per capita of people working in the building trades figures for deaths and injuries are constant over the years, the health and safety people have not contributed one bit too lowering or preventing death and injury in the construction industry , their is no input by them just financial extraction on the back of the scaffolder, scaffolders should by account work about five point five hours a day from eight to one thirty we dont need people that tell us that which we allready know, your time is up every time you look at a man in a shirt and tie your looking at some one earning fifty thousand pounds a year at least from you and their is thousands of them, they should go back on the tools that they are afraid of, then we would be able to get this industry moving forward into the twenty first century not back to the victorian age where it is now ,union bosses are in cahoots with thes con artistes, they dont work they just wag their tongues and the worst out of the lot is an arse lickin scaff mate the game is crap, too many hangers on doin nought, we are worst off than laborours its glorified labouring, dont try and defend the awful state of this scaffolding get all the suits out of the building industry

Latest Health and Safety Executive figures show there were 53 fatal injuries in the sector in 2008/9

The construction industry accounted for the third highest rate of fatal injuries in 2008/9, new figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed today.

In 2008/9, there were about 53 fatal injuries in the sector at a rate of 2.5 per 100,000 workers, which puts it just behind the agricultural and extractive industries.

The rate of fatal injuries has decreased by 34% over the past three years. Workplace fatal injuries fell from 233 in 2007/8 to a record low of 180 in 2008/9.

The HSE said comparisons with international data showed Britain to be one of the safest places to work in the EU.

Judith Hackitt, chair of HSE, said: “It is really encouraging to see these improvements in the numbers of deaths, injuries and cases of ill health at work over the last year.

“In spite of the encouraging overall statistics today let's not forget that they also tell us a story of individuals and families who have suffered. This underlines the real risks that people can face at work every day. This is what the real health and safety agenda has always been about and it will continue to be so.”

i agree that our bodies are abused and some people suffer lot of pain but its the nature of the game.ie phisical work

Hi Saintscaffolder

I was going to suggest you become a dental nurse yourself, but on further investigation,I changed my mind :(

Role & Responsibility
Dental nurses in the UK are employed in dental practices, community dental centres, hospitals, and the armed services.
Dental nurses are responsible for ensuring the Dentist or Oral Surgeon's operating list runs smoothly during the course of a clinical session. This can include, but is not limited to:
  • All instrumentation is correct, not damaged and has been thoroughly sterilised
  • Radiographs, study models and case notes are prepared for the clinical session
  • Necessary lab work/results and supplies are available
  • The dental surgery /operating room is clean and equipment is in good working order
  • Assisting with suction during dental procedures like cleaning, scaling and polishing of teeth.
  • Offering emotional support to patients with an anxiety towards dental treatment.
Dental nurses also need organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Dental Nurses in the UK

Qualifications

Previously, no academic qualifications were needed to work as a Dental nurse in the UK. The vast majority of Dental nurses began their careers with in house training (under the direct supervision of a senior Dental nurse or Dentist). However employers now, including hospitals and the community dental service, now require all Dental nurses to have obtained recognized qualification, following the GDC (general dental council) new register for dental care professionals.
Qualifications recognized by the GDC for registration after 30 July 2008 are:[2]
(UK)
  • The National Certificate awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN)
  • NVQ level 3 in Oral Healthcare
  • SVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Nursing
  • Certificate of Higher Education in Dental Nursing–1 year programme
Dental hospitals and further education colleges run courses on a full-time and part-time basis. The Certificate of Higher Education in Dental Nursing previously only offered at Portsmouth Universisy, is now also available at Teeside University
Most Dental nurses, who start their career in general dental practice, have to study in the evenings or on day release, this requires a lot of self discipline.
A small proportion of Dental nurses start their career in a hospital. They will attend lectures, usually at a school of dental nursing several times a week. Their practical experience is gained from placements on specialists clinics within the hospital. As a rule, at the end of their training period, they are required to take a hospital proficiency test preceding the NEBDN examination.
The NEBDN certificate is awarded to Dental nurses who have successfully passed the examination and completed two years of full-time surgery experience. The NEBDN certificate is recognized in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
The NEBDN exam consists of a written paper, spotter, practical and oral test. The NEBDN exam takes place twice a year, in May and November.[3]
Candidates must score 75% (or more) in each test in order to successfully pass, otherwise the candidate will be failed and will have to resit the exam again later in the year or at the next sitting.
The NVQ level 3 in oral healthcare is a fairly new qualification that has been approved by the NEBDN. Rather than the tradition studying and examination of the NEBDN certificate, Student dental nurses completes modules through out their course, which counts towards their final examination. The NVQ however is only recognized in the UK.
Post qualifications

Qualified Dental nurses can increase their knowledge and skills by studying for NEBDN post-qualification certificates. These are available in a number of specialist areas, including:
  • Oral Health Education
  • Dental Sedation Nursing
  • Special Care Dental Nursing
  • Orthodontic Nursing
  • Dental Radiography
Experience as a Dental nurse can be helpful as progression to occupations such as dental hygienist and dental therapist. Some Dental nurses prefer to progress into roles such as dental nurse manager, tutor dental nurse or dental practice manager.
GDC Register

The General Dental Council opened the new Register for Dental Care Professionals in July 2006. By July 2008, Dental nurses MUST register with the GDC .This includes anyone working as a dental nurse part-time, or occasionally and temporary/locum dental nurses working independently or through an agency.
Salary and other benefits

There are no set salary scales for dental nurses’ in general dental practices. Salaries are individually negotiated and tend to be higher in London and south-east England.
Hours and environment

Hours of work vary. Working with a general dental practitioner usually begins at 9am and ends 5pm. However this may also include occasionally working evenings and weekends. Hospital and community dental service based dental nurses’ work more regular hours.
Hospital based Dental nurses may sometimes be required to assist in operating theatres or attend to patient’s on a ward with a dentist or surgeon. The community dental service work in a number of different places including health authority surgeries, mobile clinics, schools, residential care homes and patients' own homes.
Dental nurses working for the community dental service and armed forces typically need to hold a valid drivers license and have their own reliable transport. you will need hours of training

the figures came down because the industry crashed due too the latest resession consequently many were not working, i said the figures are the same nationally, implying that with or without the influence of the HSE people the figures have not changed from year to year

ads for scaffolders and hourly rates are advertised in some parts of the country at nine pound an hour, you do on average a ten hour day , for money that has not gone up in line with inflation and is effected by the current economic resession, i doubt you get any more than me its obvious that you are a jobs worth, in your bosses pocket,i doubt you are getting what i said and judging by your stance you never will

Well if YOU get paid less the a dental nurse then you cant be very good at your job because i dont get paid less then a dental nurse and i doubt that most of the lads on here get paid less proberly just another chancer!!

.
Agreed +1

I'm not a scaffolder. I am in the H&S industry to a certain degree. I help design and produce safety signs and equipment inspection systems. I work in an office from 8-5 evrey day and I wear a suit. Bet you love me :embarrest:

I took a 20% reduction in salary when I moved to my new comapny after being made redundant from my previous company (same industry). I don't earn a fortune and have to look after the pennies to ensure I can pay the mortgage and the bills and give my family some quality of life. I don't have a flash car, I don't have a big house. I work hard every day and am constantly knackered and wish I had more cash.

But, I just get on with it. I have a job, I have a family that appreciates the work I do and I hope that by working as hard as i do, i will get the recognition and will be able to validate a request for a wage rise. I have never been interested in what people have in life - I'm more interested in my own life to worry about what others are up to.

If you are that disillusioned with it all why don't you try something else? Or go into management yourself if it's that easy and get yourself a flash car and big house too?

well said grim72.i for one new that i would never be rich as a working scaff.he should have become a soliciter.big bucks.he should be thankfull he has got a job

If the jobs to much for you and the money isn't good enough for you the best thing is to find something else. Trust me I did. Moaning about it aint going to get you anywhere simple as. I was earning more money in 1991 than what I have done in the last 10 years.

FFS,if dental nurses get paid a good wage i think they deserve it if they have to deal with some of the 5hit coming out of some of the traps on here, fancy having to look inside some of the cakeholes on this thread..
