The reason a birdcage is Very Light Duty is because each standard has to carry the loadings from 4 different bays at a time, except for the outside standards.

Good answer, but in bs5973 the loadings and spacing's were the same as they are now for a drop scaffold, so what's changed ? that's what I want to know. How come someone just thinks its ok to re classify something when it was perfectly adequate before. Its almost like justifying your job or , lets say, justifying the new code of practice ( heaven forbid) in order to sell it to people.

Your probably right, its the same as all the regs in the construction industry, if these people wrote the them and just left them as is they'd all be out of work. Thousands of suits justifying their jobs at the end of the day.
