Floral tributes to scaffolder

Flowers at the scene.
TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known Island man, who died in front of his son after falling from scaffolding in Ryde.
Dean Marden, 47, sustained fatal head injuries in the accident, which happened at a property in Lind Street on Tuesday afternoon.
Self-employed scaffolder Mr Marden, of Oaklyn Gardens, Shanklin, was working with his son, Colin Marden, 21, when he fell around ten feet and hit his head on the pavement.
He was given first aid at the scene and treated by paramedic but he died shortly after arriving at St Mary's Hospital.
At an inquest opening yesterday (Thursday), it was said Mr Marden lost his balance while carrying a heavy metal pole and toppled backwards, catching his leg in some railings beneath the scaffolding and hitting his head on the ground.
Island coroner John Matthews described it as a freak accident.
One Lind Street resident, a serving soldier, who rushed to help Mr Marden, said he heard the sound of a metal pole hitting the pavement, followed by screaming.
"There were lots of people around him, his mates and people who had stopped to help," said the 22 year old, who did not wish to be named.
"I grabbed my army medical kit and put an emergency bandage on the back of his head, to keep pressure on the wound, but I knew he was in trouble because there was so much blood.
"He was unconscious the whole time and there wasn't much more we could do except wait for the ambulance."
Floral tributes have been laid at the scene of the accident, which is being investigated by the police and the Health and Safety Executive.
Mr Marden owned his own business, MD Scaffold, based in Shanklin. His father Colin Marden, who also worked in the building trade, died just last month of mesothelioma, aged 70

condolances to all family and freinds sorry for your loss

Condolences, Sad that he died like that in front of his son.

Admin is there any way the SF could set up & contribute some kind of collection for the familey /wife of the victim of this tragic accident, I for one would contribute and would hope that fellow SF members would contribute accordinly, we had a system on the Nuclear plant if a colleauge passed away we all had the option to make a donation to the deceased’s family

Just a suggestion but in the circumstances I feel this is the least we could do as members of the SF, for a fellow brother.

What is the general feeling about this suggestion off other SF members????

That is a very good suggestion. The SCCR will help & donate a sum of money to start the ball rolling. It is very sad when something like this happens. Our thoughts are with the family.

Thanks for the support Stu I would gladly help to start the ball rolling by making a contribution through either SF or SCCR, depending on which organisation had the debit facility in place.

Regards

Dave

There is a member of the forum Johnford a scaff who lives on the Island and a friend of the deceased, Perhaps he could be contacted and we could arrange for a wreath to be brought to the funeral on the forums behalf.

SCCR can set up a collection through Pay Pal & sent direct to who ever. PM if you want me to set this up.

Regards Stewart

Well said Brandy, in my opinion any contribution would be welcome, and as you previosly proposed even to just send a wreath would be a good gesture on behalf of SF members, I think that the SF family & admin should set a presedent by devising a policy to deal with & address these terrible & unforseen circumstances. By setting up some kind of Scaffolders benevolent fund.:wondering:

For the hardest hit, and those in the most extreame circumstances.

very sad news, thoughts with the family.whats happening with cotrubutions?

My thoughts are with his son , what an awful thing for a man to see his father die in front of him in such a way, this will effect him for the rest of his life , he will relive that day for a long time to come , i hope he can find some peace and doesn't blame himself for a tragic accident.
