ban impact wrenches

Don't know if this is of interest to you or not Gary, didn't even realise myself when I ordered it but we have the Hilti with 2 settings. I think 1 is 90 and the other 150, as you say 90 for erecting and 150 for getting them down.

Not exactly sure of the exact make Gary, I bought it on a bit of a whim when I heard one of the boy's was scanning e-bay looking for an affordable version. I will get the book tomorrow and get you all the facts and figures you may need.

Alistair

Thanks for that, I was told that a new generation was coming on the Market end of October and that a Hilti would contact me, however, Iv heard nothing to date---a typical example of working on a joint consultation with a Manufacturer on new Technologies and after all the consultation nothing came to pass...

Is it little wonder that Forum Members get sickened and retract from attempts to better our Industry---I think I'll send Mr Harrington-Jones a wee email 2morow...

Wait till I get you the right information and numbers to quote. To be honest not even the wee rep knew about it as I quizzed him about it and he told me that it would never happen then a couple of days later I just called him and told him just to send me one of the ordinary one's. I never even took it out the box but after a couple of days the fella who is using it told me it was adjustable. What he tells me is the lower setting is a bit on the light side but it maybe that we are just used to over tightening them. I have a pretty full day tomorrow but if you can wait till night before sending your e-mail I will be able to post any information you may need, and yes I do understand your frustration.

Alistair

That would be good, I'll hold off until you can have time to post the info---

Rhys was concerned that they could not grantee the 50 value, so, perhaps they have calibrated to 90 as a belt and braces option, give it a we bit more to make sure they are not liable to under Torque---and, yes the Scaff using it would feel like it was somewhat under Torque after using 150 +...

Have you had any feedback from your Client base regarding the use of the Torque Compliant Deployment of the Fittings ???

Is your competitors using Impact Wrenches ???

I know it is early days, however, is using the Impact Wrench an advantage and if so in what areas ???

Garry...

Gary, it is very early days and at the moment with 6 of us we only have 2 IW, I feel rightly or wrongly the young team can have one when they learn to turn a spanner correctly. As far as I am aware my competitor does not use them as yet but time will tell. My customer base couldn't spell torque compliant deployment of fittings but they couldn't spell advanced guard rail either before I started putting it in my method statement. As for advantage, you have got to be joking, these tools are bang on and turn a hard days graft into a walk in the park. Take away that repetitive action of turning the spanner hundreds of times a day and all your energy is reserved for either putting it away or ripping it down. There will be the odd occasion where they just don't work, the makita for instance is just a bit too big for getting round the back of a standard with only 1 inside board tight to a building but the hilti is slightly smaller and can go in but the main advantage is simply the speed and ease of use. I said on the other thread that any man on price not using this is missing a trick but actually I think we are all missing a trick regardless if you are on price or not.

I think this is the tip of the ice burg---HSQEF advantages will come to the forefront in due course once the IW has been tried and tested.

The IW has came a long way since the early days of merely adapting a bog standard IW for Scaffolding purposes...

i think its 50lbs, unless your on a hanger and sh1ting youself then its 150 lb:

In accordance with BS EN 74 screw couplers shall be tightened to a torque of 50Nm applied with a torque wrench which may have accuracy of at least +/- 5%

One of the issues with over torquing a fitting is the tendency to straighten the jaws of the gate. There have been a number of fitting failures with gates popping open due to flat jaws.

It's been many years since I had the need to use ft and inches but I recall doing fitting tests with a torque wrench at 50lbs ft.

When I was first in the game I was told a "squeek and a half was enough".

I have attached a Zip File for the perusal of interested parties.

The File contains a Very Brief Profile of the HSQEF perceived advantages of Torque Compliance, however, the viewer may perceive disadvantages of which they are invited to submit therefore, any comments that you wish to make will be thankful received and faithfully applied.

Got to be honest Gary I very much doubt you will need your flak jacket.;)

The Hilti we have is the SIW 144-A, it has a torque selection switch with the first position claiming to be 116Nm and the second position claiming 155Nm. It's smaller and lighter than the Makita but it's only 12 Volts and the batteries are only ".2Ah. It hasn't had a real tough test but the user is delighted with it so far.

Thanks for the info---that particular Hilti IW has been on the Market for some time---I will e-mail the Man from Hilti for an up-date on the New Generation, as I said Hilti told me the New Generation IW would be available from the end of October. I'll keep you up=dated as soon as I have received a response...

**** impact wrenches... I'm a scaffolder , We'd look like fukin joiners walking round with those on our belt, be no use in our enviroment anyway, ok for street work if you don't mind looking like a joiner I suppose... no way will I be using one though.... heavy, noisy... fuc.k that

IW are only an option on specific Tasks---it will never replace my Tartan Banner ...

The new Hilti wrench has been available online for a couple of weeks , now has a 3 speed gearbox and higher capacity batteries . I don`t know anyone who has tried the new version yet , so , can`t comment on performance.

Thank you for the information---I have been following your posts on the various types and make of IW's---great information profiles...

Aye, 3 week they been available eh---Thanks again for the info, it is unfortunate that Hilti has not see fit to contact me about the launch, given the line of communication was established last year...

Just viewed the attached Brochure, and viewed SIW 14-A, however, noticed SID 14-A wich is closer to the Torque Values that was discussed with Hilti ie 50 Nm deployment compliance torque value, rising to 100 Nm and finally 150 Nm dismantlement of fitting---very disappointed that Hilti did not take up the offer of Testing the New Generation IW, after initially informally agreeing to do so

Garry...

You have every right to be disappointed with Hilti Garry ...... in fact , i`d be feckin` livid after all of your input

I guess they could not guarantee 50Nm so set it at 80Nm to give them a buffer , as you have stated though , it would have been nice to have had a chance to test one before release .

Topscaff

Never mind---march or die, the SID 14-A has a 50 Nm Torque Setting...

We the SCCR were too Field Test the New Generation, I had a secure facility to Field Test for the Oil and Gas Sector, Ragscaff to Field Test on the Domestic Sector---however, for what ever reason it was not to be---association with the Field Testing would have given the SCCR a boost---nevertheless, feck them...

Garry...

Anybody ever tried one of these with the IW.
