thanks GW.
im just after some techniques of how to approach new clients/generate some work before i take the plunge.
thanks again mate .

Send some flyers out to any co that you wouldn't mind doing a bit for .never no when the flyer arives some one may have just let them down then you can fill your boots

it is a good idea to know people in trades like roofers, carpenters, fat brickies... on the jobs you are on now talk to those guys and let them know your plans...

When I started I called a few local roofing companies and loft conversion companies to get going! Once you have a couple under your belt and can get a few name boards up your be surprised how quick the phone starts ringing! Good luck!

Its quite hard when starting out fresh to generate new clients but theres plenty of media platforms now to choose from most guys start off while still working for someone else doin small privates etc till there workload increases enough to do it fu time- a lot depends on what type of work ur after, small contract works & bob the builder jobs are ok if its a quick turnaround with the gear & they pay on time. Try the local planning dept for new jobs coming through all the information reguarding whos applying for planning etc will give u the chance to introduce yourself to them either by phone of mail with a introduction pack.
The 2 bits of advise i would give u is make sure u got the logistics to support urself as overtrading is worse than undertrading. If u advertise make surw ur able to commit to any work offered as potential client wont like to be told sorry im too busy - they'll stop offering
The 2nd is learn to cherry pick you can become a busy fool by taking on everything thats offered only to find that you've been running around & earning very little....once youve got ur price work it backwards incl tax etc, have a minimum profit margin & stick to it.
Having said all that the sighns for next year are for a improvement within our industry so good luck in your new venture.

Thanks guys. I will definately take on board all the answers and put them into practice. Thanks again everyone.

I know i sound like a broken record on these similar type threads, but i'd have to say what ever u can afford to spend on a web site, spend it. Obviously gear is the priority. It doesn't have to be an all singing and dancing affair, even if it is just a single page with contact details will be sufficient. Your not going to be going for MCG works, so a single contact page for the domestics will be ample, and set a budget for an ad-words campaign for the first 6 months, because a new website will be lost against the established sites when Google searches. Ad-words are the adverts in the pink boxes right at the top of the search results page. That's what we did to start and the amount of inquiries we got through the website was unreal. A budget could be as little as £5 a day, if you target the town your in with key words, to start with (e.g 'scaffolding burnley') as apposed to a larger catchment zone ( e.g 'scaffolding lancasahire') the price each time someone clicks on your ad-words link is not as much as the more popular words, maybe 50p a click for smaller , less popular keyword searches. If that makes sense.

A lot of people are to lazy nowadays to do the leg work, so Google rules, everything is searched through t'internet, especially domestic jobs.

Something else we did was register for every free trade website, contact website, or anything else that did cost anything to register on but was a platform to advertise the business and market the brand. If it doesn't cost owt only time, what've you got to lose, bar a couple of hours watching porn in the evening? We got quite a bit of work through rated people, free to register, but you pay for leads off there, so u can pick and choose what you want to go for, obviously other people can buy the leads as well so you've still got to win the work based on being the cheapest.

Flyers are a good idea as well, cost Fck all and you can leave them on trade counters, pinned on notice boards in chippies, barbers or anywhere where people wait around. How often have you been sat there waiting for something/one and you read any old sh1te. Will raisee you leads directly but gets the brand awareness up as well, In 6 months time, after Gladis had been down the hairdressers getting blue rinsed, she picked up a flyer of your 'because you never know' and she's just phoned to say her sons going to replace the back gutter over my conservatory, and he needs a scaffold to do it. No expiry date on a flyer with contact details on.

Over time we've put more and more into the website until launching a new one last month. All singing and dancing now.

HELLO, you still awake??:D

If you need a hand with content, let me know, i'll happily draft some shizzle for thee, not to bad with the old creative description............ some people like to call it bullsh1t, but as the old adage goes ' you say tomato, i say .....................rounded red fruit, the perfect accompaniment to any salad or garnish'

its funny really, over the years of me running my own business (and i have sucessfully for over 10 years) i have never been anywhere near going bust. but how many times have you been out of a job due to your attitude?
LIKE I SAID BEFORE DONT APPLY THEN . IS THAT TOO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?????

At the start of this thread you say your looking at starting a new venture?

This was my wan**er ex business partner mate. Hence the EX bit. I was always the hands on fella and he was the business side to it. Please don't have this as a negative effect on me as we are totally different people with totally different work ethics. I have been stung by this guy and I am trying to salvage my livelyhood. But like I said, the old threads were not posted by me, they were posted by some jumped up tw*t off my account that was logged on in the office.
I hope this clears it up mate.
Cheers again for the info.

Great advice, in my my opinion anyway.

I'm also in the early stages of a start up company and have been putting a fair amount of time into researching and implementing some of what you say. One thing I have read a lot about is building a brand for the company, and marketing.
When I initially looked into it, it appeared to be a black art.
I have spoken to a few that just dismiss this idea, none on here however. But I think that it can't really do any harm and like you said it is only your time that is needed.
