You don't need an hgv but do need to sit an additional test with a trailer to drive a 7.5t vehicle if you passed your test after 96. There are loads of part ones out there who can't turn a spanner but not many who can drive a truck so to my mind if you are looking for an advantage an hgv is as good as any.

buit dont you think it would be a waist of money how much would it be to up grade to a 7.5 ton from a normal license hgv you must be talking nearly 2grand or is it gona cost about the same?

Same price of a car test, throw in the price of a few lessons and you are good to go. It's not the be all and end all but the guy is looking for an advantage and I can assure you a licence would be an advantage.

i think we,ll have to beg to differ m8 cause i can honestly say i dont no a single scaffolder with a hgv i did say being able to drive 7.5 ton would be a good thing but i wasnt aware you would need a hgv to drive 1 nowerdays

is there any body els that would like to share there views on this cause id be intrested to no what other people think.

gotta agree with aom on this one
i think it depends on what type of company you work for ...if its a big one then no you wouldnt need it as they'll have their own drivers.
but small to medium it counts as normally a crew will work off your lorries all the time.
7.5 are ok but most companies i know are all upgrading to hgv due to the amount of gear you can take out for instance a 1 x 18 tonner will save 3 x 7.5 loads so are more cost effective...
all our guys have got or are going through class2 it will always be another string on your bow.
but you need to think whats gonna benifit you personnally

Hand in glove driving and scaffing. Most on here will already have the 7.5 entitlement but being honest, it always has surprised me who just runs pick ups.

think the operating costs and requirements put a lot of people off alister,, i started of with a cabstar myself m8 but your company cant grow if your logistics stay small

Again, totally agree, which is why I'm constantly surprised by some bigger outfits using pick-ups. I always wondered if it was a city thing, closer to the yard, easy to nip back to get some more but sometimes it would be worse fighting through city traffic. I maybe went over the score with the 26 ton crane truck, but to be honest, it's invaluable.

i still run a couple of cabstars in the fleet for that very reason but they dont have to go out every day, i've actually got a site where i've left one there for over 8 months ...just to move gear arounf it as its sometimes quicker that waiting for the forklift lol

You flash city boy's just have too much spare cash.;)

They are like gold dust scaff drivers for small firms ,as the young ones can't drive 7.5 tons any more with out doing test

Maybe just as well Gary, a driving licence is very similar to the scaff cards, no guarantee you can actually do it, how many times have you seen a scaff truck with the side ripped out it?

i said i had a couple i didnt say they were flash lolo more like delboys 3 wheeler...but they do the job - anyway sez he with a 26+crane ...make my 18 tonner look like a tonker toy

we are talkin the same wogons here arnt we 7.5 is the weight fully loaded 3ton unloaded flat back scaffold ?
