How on earth are is the scaffolding industry supposed to attract the calibre of staff required for the future, when they are paying such derisory wages. It's not even the price of ten fags FFS. I'm not advocating for one second that young people should be given something for nothing, but you have to at least offer some sort of incentive for a job, which while at times rewarding is dirty, physical and highly dangerous. It's about time we evolved from the consensus of "oh you've been in trouble with the law, been a dunce at school and failed your exams - that's okay you can become a scaffolder"!

thats a first years apprentice wage same in all other trades in fact it £20 quid over the minimum for an apprentice been there my self for less trying to get a trade in plumbing but your right it shoudl be minimum wage at least sickening thinking i done it for 4 yrs and on 4th yr was still only on 150 a week

yeah min app wage is £2.60 an hour, but if your over 19 after your first year of app you are entitled to normal nat min wage. And thats why people over 18 struggle to get taken on, I think any decent company thats is willing to invest in an apprentice should look after them and in return the apprentice is likely to want to do more for them?

Was on a firm from margate where 90%are apprentices.cheap labour.poor kids actually running jobs with scary results

I totally agree with you mate 100%

The system is completely messed up.

At the same time there are training providers that need to be looked at.
We have had a couple lads on to us that have their part 1 tickets but they've never done a thing (literally) with scaffolding. Surely if you employ a part 1 scaffolder you would expect them to have at least some sort of experience.

I know a guy who did that. Had week out on site labouring, and then put himself through his part 1, lying about his experince to get on the course. Had never picked a spanner up.

Disgusting. Got half a dozen on my firm. I keep telling them to get a job in Tesco. They'd get paid three times as much and work in the dry!!
How many of these bosses would let there own offspring work for such a low wage?

To be fair when I started an app I was on £45 per week. Only lasted 2 weeks tho. At least when I have a newbie I'll pay him at least £50 a day, depending on workrate. rob dogs!

It is without doubt a liberty, but without checking it is probably all they are due by the agreement. There are plenty willing to take advantage which is the real disgrace. I heard of a few tradesmen working round here for less than 8 quid.

rumor has it the master is looking to expand and he give up the dogs and gone to monkeys and payign them peanuts

I'm not singling the company out that placed the original advertisement but surely it wouldn't hurt this or any other company looking for apprentices to pay the apprentices an extra £80-100 a week would it?

It would give youngsters a bit of incentive and it would prove the company wasn't just looking for cheap labour

I'm desperate to get into scaffOlding and I'd break your arm from your shoulder for £50 a day and I'd graft my arse off and even clean down and wax the van down weekly :p

Heard that a few times now and it rarely lasts more than a fortnight.

Heard that a few times an aw.

Don't let me get you down Clark, keep at it a job will surely come but if I have heard all these stories and getting a bit cynical of them your average city slicker gaffer will get right turned off by statements like that. Not meaning to put you off, I know it's all banter on here, just giving another point of view.

How is the hunt going, have you been to many yards of a Monday morning?

I know you don't mean tO get me down aom and you haven't!ive got a thick skin so that's not to worry, not like half of the babies on here who rear up at the first bit of objEction then start talking about £500 wagers on fights lol.. I have phoned a few to no avail and went to a couple who said they had nothing going ATM but left cv's with them as they say things change up often. Going to go to one of them again come Monday morning and ask again hell either be pissed off that I'm pestering or see I'm persistent and genuine! Going to offer a few days free work to him see if that floats his boat! Even of he uses me for a few days I can still try and use it to my advantage.
