TEESSIDE steel plant owners SSI have announced they will start recruiting 1,000 workers on August 8.

Alongside the long-awaited news, which was sweeping across the region today, the company said it will announce a target date for the restart of operations within the next few weeks.

Almost a year to the day since passionate workers marched through the town as part of a massive Save Our Steel campaign, backed by the Evening Gazette, Phil Dryden, CEO of SSI UK said: “I realise that there has been a great interest within the Teesside community about when steelmaking will be resumed.

“There has already been a considerable amount of time and effort invested in planning the project, and I am hopeful that we can give a target date soon.

“With this in mind we are taking another significant step in commencing the recruitment programme in August.”

Details of the jobs will be details will be widely publicised - including in the Gazette and on the company’s website.

The news brought instant reaction from the union at the centre of the battle to save the plant.

Michael Leahy, general secretary of Community, the largest union in the industry said: ‘This is fantastic news for the people of Teesside and a tribute to all those who worked tirelessly to keep the plant open. Teesside has some of the best trained and highly skilled people in the industry and today’s announcement creates a great platform for the future.

Community will be working closely with SSI to ensure the business goes from strength to strength.”

Nice nice.

Makes a change for someone to invest in British workers, instead of shipping the labour out to some cheaper alternative, like India or China.

well lets hope this time around they work hard and keep up the quality and not go on strike every five minutes, skive in every corner, book ghosts in and just get on with it, not like the last time, most of these places bring it on themselves then bleeeeeeet on when they all get finished.

this is going to hurt:love:

i dont believe they went a full 5 minutes without striking
