Hi everyone,
I’d appreciate some input from fellow professionals regarding a situation I encountered on site.
While assembling tube-and-fitting scaffolding, I noticed that the 90-degree couplers were being installed with the fixed (body) part underneath and the plate on top — the opposite of how I’ve always been trained to do it.
I mentioned this calmly to the supervisor, pointing out that in my experience the correct orientation is with the fixed part facing up, supporting the horizontal ledger, and the plate clamping the vertical standard from below.
This drawing (attached) shows exactly what I mean — it clearly follows that principle.
Unfortunately, instead of having a technical discussion, the supervisor insisted he was right and later even asked me to leave the site. I’ve worked with scaffolding and rope access for over 20 years, and I’ve always followed industry norms and safety logic.
Is there any official guidance (e.g., from TG20 or other national standards) confirming the proper orientation of 90-degree couplers in this case? Would really appreciate your thoughts — especially if you’ve run into similar situations.
Thanks in advance
