In 1953 Reading Corporation carried out external stonework repairs to the north-east stair turret. The arch was only permanently closed to traffic in April 1984. Most of the adjacent Victorian terraced houses in Abbot's Walk were demolished by Berkshire County Council as the site for its new Shire Hall, but it eventually decided on a greenfield site at Shinfield Park.
