saw an ad yesterday here about a new design company, cannot find the thread again, anyone know where to find it?

welcome to the forum great to have a scaffold design engineer on board .can i pick your brains and ask how you got into design it is something i want to do in the future, i am going to start by doing a first year engineering course, open university, what quals do you have. been in touch with h.s.e. about requirments to be able to do this but they didnt really clarify dont think the bod knew himself .
 
Thanks for the welcome - I got into the game by getting an HNC in Civil Engineering (minimum qualification required) & being offered a job as a trainee draughtsman with Kwikform (back in the day)
From there, it is basically a case of gaining the experience of applying what you see out on site to a design backed up by calculations using the principals you have learned at college / university
(bit like getting your driving licence then learning to drive really :blink1: )
So, to summarise, you first become a qualified Civil Engineer & 'specialise' in scaffolding design - You can take qualificationa into degree territory, but I don't feel it is necessary

BTW - I have had no hands on experience of erecting scaffold (apart form the two weeks I was sent out with a gang in my early days, but that is another story)

Having said that, I always ask opinions of scaffolders / chargehands / supervisors when producing designs, as I want us all to be 'singing from the same hymn sheet' when it comes to the finished preoduct

My feckin God, A Designer wi a brain, who would a thought we'd see the day, LOL. Only kidding Jon, just most designers don't give a feck about our thoughts

I know what you are saying, guys who I meet for the first time have a kinda 'stand off' attitude' toward me :confused: - what I design is not the 'be all & end all' to building a scaffold - YOU build it all day & every day, you know quicker, cheaper, safer methods perhaps & IMO I would be stupid not to ask questions & listen to input before trying to 'prove' a scaffold that you guys are happy to build
The scaffolders I work with have got to know me & we have a good working relationship where 'everybody' is happy with what is going on :D

Yeah but we have to remember that you know more about the load bearing capabilities of components than we could dream of knowing as well m8, its a 2 way street

We all pull together to provide the solution :D

Hell - I've been know to 'muck in' with the lads to prove that something will work / can be built :toung:
 
Here's 1 for you Jon.

I been erecting a newbuild block about 14m high, we have to bridge over an existing building with a span of 21m between the gable scaffold and cantilevered ladder beams from the front elevation (2m projection from last standard), the bridge has to support 2 lifts of climastage scaffold with 1 lift boarded, working platform mainly for joiners(no bricklaying that elevation).

Our design department has had the specs for this with the building plans, photo's, measurements and so on for 3 weeks and have come up with we need to cut the span down somehow, i can't believe that this is the case when i've build a 19m bridge with old unit beams from cantilevered ladder beams on both ends that held 3 fully boarded lifts for brickwork, surely the newer alloy beams have a better load bearing capability partly due to a far lower self weight and should be able to span this
