Anyone done any Pylon work or know what the law is regarding how close is safe work near them ?
 
We just finished a job near over head lines on the national rail line and that was a 8 meter clearance Phil
 
As you might expect, there's a guidance note for this, but for the life of me I can't remember which one. You could peruse the nasc website for the exact information. The only thing I'm sure of is it very much depends on the voltage running through the lines, but I also have 9m in my mind.
 
When i did the line crossing phil.....we got to within 3mts of 400.000kv. If in doubt ring the electric board in charge of your area.
 
How close would be it be to work near this baby

Ive got the whole grid document here for national grid competent persons pylon ,ive got my substation mate and stand off distance is 3.1m on 400kv,2.4m on 175kv......theres also a copper mat running underneath so no land anchors ,atmospherics can come into it aswell as lightning strikes, you need to phone the grid mate i promise you ive seen videos of what this sh1t does to people, its 100% failure, lift your arm up underneath it and your hairs are pulled upwards that should tell you all you need to know, this is where h and s is essential but knowledge is lifesaving :idea:
 
it's been a few years m8 since I had the pleasure to graft on the pylons, and we always had a linesman with us during work if there was juice garn through the lines.
method statement and risk assessment.
Pre-job brief also induction for the grid, just treat everything as live.Goodluck.
 
Think you will need BESC training min to do that sort of stuff
OCS put a load of us through it but done no work on it yet
 
Believe it is 15 m is the closest you are allowed
 
I've just won a contract on a substation and they told me it is 15m from the closest Pylon, that was this week mate.
 
SG5:11 says Never Erect scaffolding within 3 metres of an overhead power line that is feeding a house or within 15 metres of a high voltage line unless you have checked with your local electricity company
 
Besc, plus persons is 2 day course. Min distance is 3.1 if i remember correctly
And you gotta do what the competent person says and stay in the cone (cones save lives)
The one I done only covers for substation upto 400kv, power lines and pylons are separate courses i beleive

At the end of the day you get fried real quick

I went somewhere in Hereford I think. That's was for the computer bit then a substation in basignstoke for the practical part
