Workshop helps ensure firms use safe scaffolding
Published on Thursday 2 June 2011 07:00

BUILDING on the success of the recent health and safety workshops at the Isle of Man Employers’ Federation, the federation and government’s Health and Safety Inspectorate is promoting a workshop on scaffolding safety.

Statistics show accidents involving the collapse of scaffolding, or falls from such temporary structures, are among the most frequent in the construction industry.

In many situations scaffolding is above or next to a road, presenting additional risks to the public if such structures are not fully secure.

The difficulties of restricted access, minimal interruption to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and safety of workers are all significant challenges to scaffolding contractors, and will be addressed in the workshop.

A specialist scaffolding adviser will be presenting the workshop, which will take place on Wednesday, June 29, starting at 6.30pm.

It will be held at the Department of Health Education and Training Centre, Keyll Daree (next to to Noble’s Hospital).

Neil Jamieson, transitional head of the Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate, said the seminar – called Scaffolding in the Real World – is aimed at the building contractor, scaffolder, or any organisation involved with the procurement, management or inspection of scaffolding.

Topics to be covered include:

Scaffolding erection techniques and systems of work.

Scaffold design, tying and component rejection criteria.

Planning, inspection and management.

Delegates will receive a certificate as proof of their attendance, along with an information pack containing further guidance on health and safety and the matters discussed during the seminar.

Contractors on the Manx Accredited Construction Contractors Scheme and members of the IOM Employers’ Federation will be contacted directly.

Other contractors should contact the Federation for more information by writing to: Isle of Man Employers’ Federation, 23A The Village Walk, Onchan, Isle of Man, IM3 4ER.

Alternatively, call 660188 or email info@employersfederation.co.im
