Published Date: 21 July 2011
A man has died following an industrial accident at an oil refinery in Hampshire, police have said.
The incident occurred at the Exxon Mobil refinery, in Fawley, just before 10am.

Hampshire Police said the man, who has not been named, was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he later died.

How the accident happened has not been disclosed but detectives will work with the Health and Safety Executive to examine the incident.

The man is believed to have been a rigger from Wales who was employed by a contractor.

It is understood the man became trapped beneath pipes at the sprawling site.

The Exxon Mobil refinery is the largest in the UK and one of the most complex in Europe.

It has a mile-long marine terminal which handles around 2,000 ship movements and 22 million tonnes of crude oil and other products every year.

In a statement, the refinery said: "An investigation has been launched which will run in parallel with the HSE's and the police's own investigations.

"Our key priority continues to be the safety and well-being of our people and the safe operation of the site."
