Work begins on the west pier extension bridge

Published on Friday 2 December 2011 09:58

WORK started at first light yesterday morning on a temporary footbridge to the West Pier extension.

Scarborough Borough Council contractors DNC Scaffolding began assembling the 120cm-wide walkway, which will span the existing structure without putting any pressure on it.

Work is expected to continue today and possibly into tomorrow before the bridge is opened to the public and access to the pier extension is restored. The temporary measure is being paid for out of Whitby Harbour Board reserves while SBC considers tenders for a more permanent solution.

Chairman of Whitby Harbour Board, Coun Mike Cockerill, said: “It is pleasing to see work start on installing the temporary walkway linking the West Pier to the extension and I’m sure it will be welcomed in Whitby by locals and visitors to the town.”

We did one over a canal a few years back to a very good drawing, cant remember the exact calculations but the client took the design and ran it past their own temporary works engineer who passed a comment that you could run a tank over it. Weeks after it was built all hell broke loose when some smart erse read a book somewhere and demanded it went up to the same loading as a permanent foot bridge. Took me ages for me to persuade them the different design loadings between temporary and permanent structures. Sometimes even a drawing won't save you from grief.
