Wellies thief is sent to prison

A MAN who stole make-up, batteries and wellingtons from South Tyneside shops has been jailed.

Christopher Jackson was spotted acting suspiciously by staff in Jarrow’s Store 21 on December 10 last year.

They called police, who found the 23-year-old with £120 of make-up and £25 of batteries.

He admitted he had stolen the goods from the clothes shop and B&M bargains, and was arrested.

Just six days later he was arrested again, this time after fleeing the Market Cobbler in South Shields with two pairs of wellies worth £40.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in February, but his sentence was deferred to see if he complied with a community order he was subject to.

Jackson, of Split Crow Road, Gateshead, was back at court on Friday to be sentenced, but magistrates asked for a probation report about him.

Yesterday, chairman of the bench Sandra Connolly gave him three 21-week prison sentences, reduced to 14 weeks for his guilty pleas.

They will run concurrently.

Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “Police were called after the store manager of Store 21 in Jarrow saw him acting suspiciously.

“He was questioned, and admitted stealing make-up from the shop and batteries from B&M Bargains.

Six days later, he was caught by police after leaving the Market Cobbler in South Shields with two pairs of wellington boots, worth £40, he hadn’t paid for.”
Paul Hanratty, defending, said: “He pleaded guilty in February, and the sentence was deferred to see if he could comply with a community order and stop committing offences. His behaviour since then has been terrible. He did not comply with the order and received a custodial sentence for breaching it.

“Until the end of last year he had been out of trouble since 2008. During that time he had a job as a scaffolder and was drink and drug free.

“The recession bit and he lost his job. Soon after, a friend died and since then he has been on a worrying spiral.

“He is drinking heavily and started taking codeine – which he now says he has stopped taking.

“He is in an awful state, and I don’t think prison is the best place for him.

“He will come out homeless, jobless and the thieving will start again.

“He clearly needs help.”

Chairwoman of the bench Sandra Connolly said: “These offences are so serious only a custodial sentence is appropriate.

“The decision has been made based on your previous record and failure to comply with previous community orders.”

what they dident realise is he was going back to work as a scaff and he needed the wellies to wade through the sh#t of method statements risk assesments and all the other crap you need to go through just to keep some divi in a job who no fak all about . then when its 90 days after the work they think they have lost you invoice or in talks with the offical reciver
