I had a similar incident years ago, had to break sharply and all the gear shot forward so to get it back I reversed and hit the breaks. I think I was a bit to keen when half the load ended up on the road!!
 
My first lorry was a 5.5 dodge s56 you had to have the long over the bolster. Well one day a car stopped sharp in front of me so I had to brake. Sharp all the long came over the roof all I could see was a couple of
Kids in the back seat but has luck had it just has the tubes where going towards the back window the car pulled away what a relief
 
There used to be a driver for Mills in Liverpool,Harold,they had the roll off type of unit.Harold used to ask where do you want the gear? Take the straps off ,take off at speed,slam on ,gear would slide off the back usually all over the place,Harold would give you a wave out of the window and go!!That was about 30 years ago!!Ah the good old days!!
