THREE men have been bailed by police while inquiries are carried out into a spate of metal thefts in north Northumberland.
The trio were arrested by police after they received a number of calls from people who had items stolen.
In Berwick, gardens in the Newfields area were targeted, with a drum kit, which was under tarpaulin, and a metal wheelbarrow taken from different addresses. At East Ord, a resident reported the theft of scaffolding.
Meanwhile, at The Haven, Beadnell, a cast-iron bath was also taken.
Following information from the victims, staff at Berwick’s Tesco store and drivers on the A1, police traced a white flatbed Ford Transit van with a red rear panel, heading south on the A1, at around 11am.
The three occupants were arrested on suspicion of theft and have been bailed pending further inquiries in relation to property recovered from the vehicle, which has been impounded.
Police have appealed for anyone with information or who may have seen a van matching the description of the one stopped in the area, to contact them by calling 101 ext 69191.
Berwick neighbourhood inspector Sharon Wilmore-Greaves has asked anyone who sees any suspicious vehicles or any vehicles carrying scrap metal, to contact police immediately.
Northumbria Police recently teamed up with neighbouring forces as well as British Transport Police and the Environment Agency to target the theft of scrap metal and scrap dealers who buy stolen items.
The partnership operation involves scrap dealers signing up to a code of conduct, and has also seen raids carried out on scrapyards.
