Tributes paid to 23-year-old Lewis Bevan who died in Crayford car crash9:55am Tuesday 28th February 2012 in Top Stories By Jim Palmer

TRIBUTES have been left by family and friends to a popular 23-year-old from South Darenth who died in a late-night car crash in Crayford.

Arsenal fan Lewis Bevan, of Devon Road, died when his Ford Fiesta left the road and crashed into two walls in Perry Street, Crayford some time before 1am on Friday (February 24).

Police officers and paramedics rushed to help, but the scaffolder was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place at the Princess Royal Hospital in Orpington today (Tuesday, February 28)

Many people living nearby slept through the incident, including retired transport worker John Davies, 80, of Iron Mill Lane whose back garden wall was hit by the car.

Mr Davies said he awoke at 7am to find his workshop ‘demolished’ and the garden ‘crawling with police’.

The car was taken away shortly after he woke up, he said, and the rest of his wall demolished because it was too unstable to be left standing.

"We slept through it," he said.

"But we are of the generation that slept through the Blitz in 1941."

His wife Shirley, 77, added: "There were a lot of people coming up over the weekend to leave tributes and console each other.

"It’s very sad. It is not very nice knowing someone died in your back garden either."

Family and friends left floral tributes, pictures and even two Arsenal shirts by the crash sites.

One said: "Lewis, my number one son. From your number one mum. Love you always and forever. Big hugs, xxxx"

Another said: "I can’t use words to describe how much you mean to me. "You were more than a brother to me. Knowing you made me who I am today and for that I’m grateful.

"I’m so lucky to be able to call you my best mate but you have been taken too soon.

"I’ll miss you so much. I love you to bits, Pilgrim."

Lewis’ boss of five years at Mid Kent Scaffolding, Guy Eldridge described him as a ‘typical lad’.

Mr Eldridge, 52, said: "His dad’s my best mate. He was a good boy, he was a typical lad.

"When he was at work he was as good as gold. He was very popular. He had a lot of friends, he got on with everyone.

"It happens to the wrong people."

Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit at Catford are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call 020 8285 1574
