.Friday, January 27, 2012 Scunthorpe Telegraph

Tributes have been paid to a Scunthorpe scaffolder who died at a cement works.

John Altoft, 29, was working away on business in Warwickshire when the accident happened.

The incident occurred at the Cemex UK factory at Lawford Road in Rugby shortly before 2am on January 18.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said crews treated a significant head injury, but Mr Altoft was pronounced dead at the scene. A 36-year-old man who was also injured was treated for an arm injury at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

Mr Altoft was working as a scaffolder for Cape and was engaged to be married.

It is understood that Mr Altoft had worked for Cape at various points in his life since 2001, when he joined the firm as a labourer.

The project in Rugby was his fifth stint for the company and, prior to working at the Cemex site, he had been working for Cape in Scotland and was well known in the business.

A spokesman for Cape said: "Cape is greatly saddened by John's death and extends its deepest sympathy to his family and those close to him."

Tributes from fellow scaffolders have been posted on Scaffolders Forum.

One post left by someone known as AWY reads: "I worked with him a few times and went through our courses together. Good lad – very sad loss. RIP John."

A poster called benjo0211 said: "Very sad to hear. RIP and condolences to his family and hope the other worker has a full recovery."

Another poster called b19kev, added: "I work for Palmers and was there. The lad was from Cape scaffolding, not sure exactly what happened. They haven't really said yet – until the investigation's finished. Really sad news though. Thoughts go out to the family and friends."

Cemex UK said the Health and Safety Executive had been informed and the company was co-operating with its investigation. In a statement, Cemex UK said: "The cement plant is currently in its annual shutdown period for regular maintenance and there are a number of contractors on site.

"The deceased was employed by one of these contractors and is from outside the Rugby area."

The company is one of the country's largest producers of building materials.

Regarding Mr Altoft's death, a spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: "We are aware of it and the Health and Safety Executive is investigating it and the investigation is ongoing."

A funeral will be held at Woodlands Crematorium, Scunthorpe, on Monday, January 30 at 2pm.
