Hi guys we have a timber frame job up at minute n using ties in timber but they want them out as block work progresses they don't want us to use Hilti ties as it leaves a big hole is there any other tie which is smaller that we can use? Cheers guys!!

Ive seen the ties that use the plastic raw plug. The hole is much smaller. This may be an option.

we are using the ties tony is talking about on a job we are doing now and im sure they are 14mm holes with plastic wall plugs and 300mm rods but you also need the couplers with the hooks that connect to the rod(a lot of components).Or you could use the appollo bolts which I think are 12mm.

We have the hooks as using them already on the timber ties can they be used asking as we use the wall plugs?

Yes mate, that's an Apollo tie and is used with the hooks when applied with the plastic rawl plugs. They also sell plastic inserts for when the tie is removed to plug the hole.

Do they have t be specially designed wall plugs or can u just use ordinary wall plugs from a diy stores?

Check out the appolo website m8 - as long as it passes a pull test

We use ADI supply for this type of Tie and they are brill. Good product from stock and back up on technical questions if you need it.

Beat me to it m8 ^^^^^ gotta agree they got a fab catalogue ....a must for the shelf

A tie reguardless of its make is classified from the results of the pull test that you require

Be careful using different companies inserts with different bolts, Even if everything was bang on a you achieve the required tension on your pull test, if anything ever went tits up and goes back to manufacturer, first question they'd ask is did you use our inserts/plugs with our bolts. Believe it or not, all of the nylon plugs are not the same, i know there's not going to be a massive difference, but would you really want to take the risk?? Good way for the suppliers to retain clientele once you've bought a shed load of bolts, agreed. If your supplier is any good though, they will advise you on the best product for the material your fixing to, i.e length of plug or length of bolt, with out wanting to just make an extra sale every time.

From experience they don't hold well on fresh brick work, plus there needs to be enough brickwork above them, think it was 1.8m. Also if you stick them in the muck joint they can lift the wall above it as it winds into the plug
In brickwork that was 2months old we failed to get 5kn pull on nearly all of them

I think they are great ties ,
I don't think there is much difference in price with the plugs and always just order from Apollo ,
Thy also send you a book full of different tie options and what position in brick work is best for the ties

Not much works in fresh brick. You need the full 2m of brickwork above your last tie and if your going into the muck you have to make sure that your hole is bigger than the joints and double the rate for testing.
