Scam Warning
Police are warning members of the public about a scam whereby the victim buys UKash vouchers in exchange for a PPI compensation cheque.
A report was received from one victim in the Redcar area who was repeatedly called on his landline from a number similar to that of a legitimate PPI claim company. The callers were in possession of his personal details and the victim was asked for pre-paid Ukash vouchers totalling nearly £800 in exchange for a PPI compensation cheque of nearly £3000.
Pre-payment of this kind is not requested by legitimate companies and police are concerned that scams of this kind may increase in the run-up to Christmas.
Anyone with information regarding the scam is asked to contact the non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
