Scaffolding towers a work of art

JONATHAN CAMERONA Taranaki company has reached new heights after claiming the top prize at New Zealand's largest scaffolding conference.Relevant offersA Taranaki company has reached new heights after claiming the top prize at New Zealand's largest scaffolding conference.

New Plymouth-based business Cunningham Construction won the Scaffolding and Rigging New Zealand Scaffold of the Year prize for its work on the major corrosion repair project at Methanex New Zealand's Motunui methanol production facility.

The job involved erecting 260 tonnes of scaffolding to enable repair work on the four towers at the plant.

Cunningham Construction owner Paul Cunningham was thrilled with the announcement.

"It was an unusual and challenging project and we are delighted to have our work recognised in this way," he said.

The scaffolding needed to be 70 metres high, which was too tall for a crane, so much of it was erected by winch and manual handling, he said.

"It was up for almost 18 months and had to withstand very heavy winds.

"We are just taking down the last of the scaffolding now."

A huge number of people were required for the project and it involved extensive safety and environmental planning, he said.

"It has gone extremely well."

Cunningham Construction received the award at the annual Scaffolding and Rigging New Zealand (SARNZ) conference dinner in New Plymouth last weekend.

Mr Cunningham spoke to the Taranaki Daily News shortly after the scaffolding was erected last year.

"As far as we're concerned it is definitely a work of art.

"We've figured out that there's about 260 tonnes of scaffolding around those towers, and that if it were all laid out end to end it would go round Mt Taranaki once then carry on all the way to White Cliffs."

SARNZ members represent more than half of all scaffolding personnel in New Zealand. SARNZ has 74 member companies.
