Scaffolding Lorry gets stuck under Shrewsbury bridge

A truck trapped under a bridge held up drivers during the rush hour in Shrewsbury this morning.

The Harlescott-based Jarvis Scaffolding vehicle got stuck under the railway bridge at Castle Foregate just after 8am.

Police and fire attended the scene.

A spokesman for Jarvis Scaffolding confirmed it was their vehicle involved in the incident but said they had no further comment to make at this time.

No wonder they didn't want to comment, the driver must have been doing a wee homer at the time. Either that or that's the first time I've seen a skip used to transport material.:embarrest:

believe it or not we looked into using this kind of skip / container to transport gear about, we were going to modify them into a secure type storage, transportable rack for short tubes, fittings and just somewhere our site staff could keep stuff they needed looked up but handy on the job lol
 
Haha, when I was writing it I new someone would have considered it that's why I added the disclaimer at the end. Descent idea on paper but obviously you haven't pursued it. I shouldn't laugh as I did something just as stupid after we got a new truck, the boy's had spare gear and rather than leave it spread all over they made a stillage from system so I could hook it straight on to the back of the truck. I laughed when I saw it as the only standards they had were 3m, you ought to have heard the racket when I went to fill fuel.:eek::laugh::eek:
 
Didnt pursue it Aom , because the company was liquidated due to 3 big accounts going belly up on us at the time, we were looking to change the company from a basic scaffold contract type to a more market specific contractor concentrating on asbestos type work, roof edge an fall protection, and providing a package type service targeting the pre fabricated buildings market, most of which would include some travel away from home , so we looked at creating roll onoff accomadation with built in generator, shower facilities etc, scaffold storage, waste license so able to use wagons to full potential for skip service , also poss to transport any plant we might buy like mewps, forklift, hoists anything really , you can get alsorts made for them , add a 4 axle hooklift unit with a drawbar trailer and the worlds your oyster. :smile1::smile1:
 
A massive investment though. One thing about the way trucks are built now is they can give you options. Our new investment was a 26t Volvo with a 32t remote crane which is a beast. I thought about getting more work out it, shifting cabins and the like but while the truck is not out all the time it's usually needed the same time someone wants a cabin shifted and the last thing I wanted is to work more hours so I think we will be sticking to the basics. There is a building firm round our way that shift's a lot of gear using this hook system but from what I saw you don't want to use it for shifting scaffold.:eek:
 
If it aint loaded right falls of the back ! The hookloader angle of loading is nigh on vertical !! Have ran cablelift and hookloader both present there own problems

Aom - best solution 6 wheeler with crane like u have just invested in mate
 
We are finding the crane is great for the system because it's stillged and fairly uniformed. Different ball game for the tube. It's working well most of the time as I am there all day when building tube and after the fitting's, boards and 5 fts have been craned off we just hand ball the tube as normal. I know there was a thread regarding stillets but we have never even seen a stillet let alone use one. I suppose it will be another investment we will have to make in the future.
 
Don't know what I mean but I thought the stillets were steel frames for stacking tube?
 
possibly if different thing but same name , ive seen some brackets before that stack tube into triangle, pyramid type bundle in the past.

but i mean stillits that is 2 frames 5 board wide, you put each frame say 3ft in from end of board , each end and once you have first 5 boards in , it becomes rigid and they hold bout 100 boards, stack on top of each other, forklift friendly, look ok
 
Must be a different thing, we just band boards in 50's seems to work well enough. There was a thread on stillets with a few pictures might have been red when there was pics involved seems to be the way people are moving tube about now.
 
Tube stillets hold 70 tubes i think only good with crane if you choke the stillet with a strop , if you put chains next to stillet just folds them in

Come on aom that crane investment needs to earn its money , call ram steel up and order a load of stillets up (6.00) hand ballin days are over

Not had it that long scaffy still learnin. We did a few successful runs with tube in stillages then brought a part load back over a mountain single track road, met a motor on a downhill corner hit the brakes and you guessed it fire missile 1through 100.:eek: We will get there eventually.

the board stillit i was on about was more to do with returning from site than leaving yard lol and moving around site
 
That's another thing that get's my goat at the minute, complained to the big fitter that straps are getting weaker and he told me it's just the way things are going but he could get me a load of heavy duty one's. They turned out to be the worst of the lot, the things just bend in your hand. We complain about our fittings but where the hell do you get descent ratchets now?
